Iraq Not Another Vietnam? That's Right - It's Worse.
Edited on Mon Apr-12-04 11:34 PM by stopbush
I keep hearing from the pundits that "Iraq MAY turn into another Vietnam. We're not there yet, but if we're not careful..."

I've got news for them: it's already worse.

It's worse for the simple reason that the war in Iraq - unlike the police action in Vietnam - was drummed up and pre-sold to the American public as the Greatest Reality Show on Earth. We were invited to watch - upfront and personal! We were presented with a front row seat to the opening of a big ol' can of American whoop-ass and pay-back that would make WWII look like a slow-moving drama.

Vietnam started out quietly, initially with advisers being sent in to coach the South Vietnamese forces, and with the terms of the war and America's involvement escalating over time. Iraq, on the other hand, was based on the Powell doctrine (minus the clear exit strategy) and sold to the American public as a show of fireworks, American chutzpah and heroism.

There was no entering on the sly for this war! Compare Iraq to our other occupations around the world (Afghanistan) and our other, more covert (ie: traditional American imperialism) activities (Haiti, Venezuela). You don't see those Vietnam-reminiscent ops all over the front pages, do you?

And that is why it's worse. After only one year of occupation, the American public is losing faith in the war and is *now* at a point that the America of the 1960s arrived at after YEARS of bloodshed.

And that's one reason why bush is toast.

1. Well...

In some ways it worse...

If there was a nation supplyinh them an endless supply of weapons it would be way worse. I think that is what conservatives I know site as the reason that it is not yet Vietnam.

I think we can't be sure until the next few years go by and we see the situation than.

Of course, all of our predictions have come true so far...

2. At this point, the Iraqis don't need anyone else supplying weapons.
My understanding is that they're armed to the teeth in just about every home and office on every street in every town.

they are having to build improvised explosives..

The Soviet Union were providing modern weaponery.

After June 30th doesn't happen, I think we can tell one way or the other.

Either way, it's complete bullshit

5. It's really more like the Soviet fiasco in Afghanistan
Our future as a "superpower" depends on the willingness of Iraqis to let us push them around without stirring things up. Simply burning a few mercenaries pushed the entire government into crisis. Was this lesson lost on those who hate us ?
