4. I think the final straw was the Iran crisis. It was a mess by the
time the election was voted on. Lots of rumors after that was that Reagan made a deal with Iran to hold the hostages until after the election. No investigation into that one was there.

8. There was an investigation
There was an investigation into Reagan and Bush involvement in delaying the release of the hostages. The investigation concluded there was no involvement.

Supposedly, Bush was in Paris while some representative of Iran was in Spain, and supposedly Bush flew to Paris secretely to make the deal with Iran. I think the investigation decided that didn't happen. I don't know how. I have a close friend who swears he was privy to the classifieds of that investigation (he was in a position to be) and he swears he's convinced. He's a bit naive at times, though.

So who knows what happened. But you are right, what killed Carter was the sudden breaking of the hostage deal. Carter had negotiated for their release, and Khomeini had agreed, but suddenly at the last moment refused to release them. That swung the election to Reagan, because it made Carter look like he couldn't get anything done. The polls were neck and neck in that race until a couple of days before the election, when Reagan gained the edge.

The hostages were released as Reagan was being inaugurated.

5. Smirky isn't necessarily 'not doomed'...
On the contrary, I think it's highly unlikely that he can win a legitimate election.

7. It took a year and Ted Koppel doing "Hostage Countdown" every night
on what was then the new "Nightline," and gas lines and a bad economy to bring down Carter. (Much of which was due to RW hammering away, but still he didn't manage things as well as Clinton) It will take time. Even Nixon was re-elected with the Watergate break-in fresh in everyone's mind. It took another year to get rid of him with hearings and leaks and Woodward/Bernstein.

Chimp is coming off his 9/11 High, with "Powers that Be" running him.
It will not be easy, but he's already got enough rope now to hang himself.
