I don't think one should generalize about intentions.

Different people in the White House had different reasons for supporting the war; different people in the private sector who support the war have different reasons.

Some people genuinely want a democratic Iraq because they think that democracy will spread throughout the Middle East and the world will be a better place.

Other people are motivated by greed. They profit from the $87 billion, through a corrupt bidding process and being allowed to overcharge, thanks to no-law-against-profiteering and no-GAO-oversight.

Lastly, among people in the general public who supported the war, some were scared by Bush's talks of wmd and thought we had to attack Iraq or Iraq would attack us.
