The religious nut in charge of Asscroft's "war on porn"
His name is Bruce Taylor.

"So, to me, hardcore pornography -- under the definition used by the Supreme Court, with penetration clearly visible -- is the kind of material we prosecuted in Cleveland. It's the kind that all the federal courts have prosecuted since Deep Throat and a lot of those regular movies.

And it is still the standard by which the Justice Department and most prosecutors enforce obscenity laws anywhere in this country. ... That's why we could say safely, without blaspheming or defaming anybody, that just about everything on the Internet and almost everything in the video stores and everything in the adult bookstores is still prosecutable -- illegal obscenity."

Basically, he thinks pretty much all pornography is already illegal.

"The Supreme Court in 1973 also gave us some examples of the kind of sexual conduct that could be found to be obscene by the jury. They said it could be ultimate sexual acts, normal or perverted, actual or simulated, and it could include masturbation"

Masturbation, too.

This guy is one of those religous whack-jobs who is obsessed with porn and other people's private lives. Now he's leading the war, on our dime!

Or molests children.

So many of these Fake Pious Busheviks are concealing their own sexual deviancy...and I have no doubt that their's is much more hurtful that the people they are going after.

Have you noticed all the Repug Party Pedophiles getting arrested lately, from Phil Giordano foreward.

And no, I don't think it's a coincidence.

8. Actually, it is (Keating's legal advisor and protege, anyway)
Edited on Mon Apr-12-04 05:57 PM by JHB
"I think he's going to be more inclined to be aggressive in prosecutions rather than being objective to the preservation of the First Amendment, and that does concern me," (obsenity charge defense lawyer H. Lewis) Sirkin noted. "He's never had any objective position from his very beginning days as an assistant city prosecutor in Cleveland throughout his career. He has followed, and he has followed very closely and has been aligned with people who have an absolute commitment... to being anti-sexually explicit material regardless of whether it's protected or not. And don't let it be overlooked that his career was really molded by Charles Keating's group, once it moved to Arizona."

Keating, it will be recalled, was the founder of Citizens for Decency through Law (formerly Citizens for Decent Literature, also initialed as "CDL"), which began in Ohio and later was headquartered in Arizona at a time when Taylor was Assistant Attorney General for the state. Keating was also the principal of Lincoln Savings & Loan, and in the 1980s was convicted of bilking hundreds of depositors out of their life savings in an investment fraud scheme.

Sirkin described Taylor as a "bigwig" in Keating's CDL organization, and one of Keating's top legal advisors.

"He's been a paid professional to wipe out sexually explicit material. That's been his entire career," Sirkin stated. "He's entitled to his opinion, but not as a government representative. He's unwilling to look at the other side."

4. It has occurred to me that....
...a successful campaign against Internet porn, even stuff that no one defends like kiddie porn and snuff films, will put a censorship mechanism in place that could work equally well for other types of material. Maybe this is the reason Asscrack's so excited about it.

7. US filtering software *IS* used by PRC and Saudi Arabia
Stuff designed domestically to block access to sex sites from work IS used to help governments block dissenting political views.

See http://news.com.com/2100-1023-975517.html?tag=nl

Obligatory quote

"Citing news reports, Amnesty named several U.S.-based companies as alleged suppliers of technology used in the Chinese government's crackdown on Internet speech. These included Sun Microsystems, Cisco Systems, Microsoft, Nortel Networks and filtering software supplier Websense."

And while I'm on my soapbox, did you know that many of the most popular filtering programs facilitate blocking "political" sites having no sexual content whatever!
