3. Dunno, but I only lasted a month or so in fear-the-public land
it was fun tho! Heck, it's actually how I found DU. They kept griping so much about it I finally had to check it out. Thank God!

4. not very long, once they stop lurking
it depends on how well they 'mask' their posts, but most of them give themselves away from post One, IMO.

8. I hope you are right about that.
But I don`t think so. I think there may what I would call "Agent Provocators" posting in hopes of entrapping some poor saps into saying the wrong thing as in something the GOP portion of our Gov., The Administration, can go after them about. Don`t forget about The Patriot Act. I hope Sen. Kerry starts making some noise about getting rid of that all out assault on the rights American`s used to enjoy. Does anyone know of any remarks by Sen. Kerry as to this legislative abomination. Protect and defend the Constitution. ....Oscar

11. I lasted 5 minutes as a Freeper.
It actually happened yesterday. I posted the Newsweek poll Kerry 50% Bush %43 and they hated it.

Anyway, I emailed DU asking them how many posts I should have before I can start a topic, I've received no answer. Does anyone know?

13. That's a good one,
but I don't see any Republicans down in the dungeon. Sure there's the occasional 15 post guy who gets tombstoned, but I'd hardly call that a warm welcome.

Edited on Sun Apr-11-04 11:58 AM by tinanator
and ofttimes far too long. I for one would prefer they were allowed to exist in the sunlight and attempt to defend their real feelings and beliefs, as despicable and ignorant as they may be. On the other hand, the more talented duplicitous ones continue to disrupt and more importantly divide the gullible and less enlightened. Worse by far are the self convinced Democrats who defend atomic bombings, wars of aggression, ridicule honest progressives who offend their sensibilities and inhibit progress towards solidarity and social justice. The uneven disbarments of less sophisticated rightists makes the survivors all the more dangerous.

15. Unfortunately, those are probably only the most obvious ones
Edited on Sun Apr-11-04 12:04 PM by starroute
The blatant Freepers who come here to spew rw talking points get tombstoned quickly.

There are also provocateurs, who are more likely to spout what seem like extreme left-wing positions, advocate violence, and generally try to make us look bad. Some of those also give themselves away quickly (like the one this morning who was wishing for more dead soldiers), but if they're subtle enough about it, they can fly under the radar for a long time.

And I sometimes suspect there are deliberate underminers among us -- the ones who are always quick to post a negative poll, start threads headed "It's all hopeless" or "They're going to get away with it," or express "hard-nosed" opinions about military options.

Those would be the hardest to identify, because there are legitimate members of DU who are simply more cynical, or more given to despair, or more conservative in their thinking. But I know that if I were a serious COINTELPRO type trying to weaken DU (as opposed to a Freeper loudmouth), I would be working to chip away progressives' self-confidence, sow doubts about their goals, and incide divisions among them.

It that isn't happening yet, it certainly will be as DU gains attention and influence. And (don't kid yourselves) it will happen even if Kerry is elected -- at least once the honeymoon is over and progressives start to criticize a Kerry administration for not breaking with 30 years of failed American policies.

So be alert, be aware, and be positive. Love one another and always maintain the dream of America as it should be.

On edit: Hi, tinanator. I think you and I just said the same thing. Are you thinking of the sixties, too?

18. You know, sometimes I think you're right
about some of the "odder" things being said by "agents" (ooooo! this is so double-oh-seven!), but then sometimes I think that we just have a very eclectic group that isn't necessarily tied to various talking points or rigid thinking.

I've been wrong before, though: I can handle it.

:toast:

23. Trust your feelings
Do you always feel discouraged or depressed after reading a certain member's posts? If you do, they are an underminer. If you simply feel thoughtful and in need of giving serious consideration to an opinion different from your own, they aren't.

Not all underminers are deliberate. Some are just energy drains -- people who relieve their own negative feelings by dumping them onto everyone else. But all of them are dangerous.

24. The average lifespan of a freeper
Is anywhere from zero seconds (we literally get them before they start posting) to... whenever. But frankly if someone is so good at pretending to be a Dem that they can get away with posting here without getting caught, what's the big deal? I mean, think of it the opposite way - if you went to Free Republic and played the part of a Republican so convincingly that they thought you were one of them, what have you achieved exactly? Eventually you could "unmask" and say "aha! fooled you!" - and then you'd get your ass tombstoned in five seconds flat. Uh, mission accomplished... I guess.

Anyway, I'm locking this now. Sorry, but we've had a rash of these "beware the undercover Freepers" posts recently, and they are far more disruptive than anything a couple of sad, lonely Freepers could do by wasting their time and energy pretending really well to be something they hate. It would serve DU much better if people would just debate the issues and stop focusing so much on people's motives - in fact, that's why we have a rule against calling people Freepers when you're debating with them. We have dealt with disruptors since day one, and we will continue to do so. "Vigilante moderating" does nothing but spread completely unwarranted paranoia among the membership.

Thank you for your understanding,

EarlG
