Having spine vs. being a douchebag.
When does one stop and the other begin?

Everyone kvetches a lot about the spineless Democratic party here. On the other hand, it seems to me that a lot of the democrats with what could be called "spine" (Ms. Rhodes, for example, who I admittedly don't like that much) come off as total and utter douchebags, unwilling to listen to anyone. (Note to confused people: this thread is not about Randi Rhodes.)

Where do you guys think that having a spine ends and having your head shoved up your ass begins? Discuss, and please keep it civil.

1. If you act like O'Reilly...
then you are a douchebag.

2. Oh, you mean like Clinton as opposed to the Chimp???
Wouldn't it be nice to have a real man back in the Oval Office instead of the boy king?

3. Nah, I mean...
..."stands up for what you believe in" vs. "thinks they're always right and refuses to listen to anybody else."

Paul Wellstone vs. Randi Rhodes, for example, or John McCain vs. Bill O'Reilly.

5. Part of the spine problem with democrats
is that they can appear to have no spine because the media is a military wing of the thug party.

7. Indeed, the programming of certain meme's are effective on
progressives...like the "spineless Democrat" one. When Dems are fighting, the media doesn't amplify it. But you never hear the media promote the "spineless Republican" meme.....even though they are in the majority and are letting this criminal administration destroy the economy and wreck the Constitution. Those moderate, rubber stamping Republican-eunachs that won't stand up to Bush, Frist, and DeLay and do what's right for America are the true cowards in our country today.

8. hmmm
having a spine means picking a stand and sticking to it. Kucinich (I've never supported him BTW) was consistent about the war but never lost his sense of humor and humanity. On the other hand, the knee jerk "My country right or wrong" can easily devolve into head up your @ssness.

Question the Rulers, but keep an open mind if there is new information (ala Kerry on Welfare reform when he changed his view on work)

I am anti war and have been since 1969. marched against Viet Nam, gulf one and gulf two. But I am always ready to listen. I was for Free Trade until I did more research on the WTO, so all can live and learn if your mind is open.
