Canadians - what do you think of the Dali Lama situation?
For those who haven't heard: The Dali Lama is coming to Canada, China has said if Canada "Values good trade relations" Prime Minister Martin won't meet with him.... What kind of BS threatening is this?

Do you think Canada will be a buncha wimps and not give the Dali Lama an audience? Or do you think they'll tell China to help themselves to a nice cup of "Shut the hell up"?

This really ticked me off, who the hell do they think they are telling us who our PM can and can't hang out with?

1. Shit no, don't destroy our trade relations with China

We might have to open up our closed down factories and start building our own TVs, transistor radios, computers, toaster ovens and umbrellas again.

2. Take it from one in the States...
Canada doesn't WANT good trade relations with China. Good trade relations with China will have the effect of sucking out any manufacturing/assembly jobs you might have left there. Great for your CEOs, lousy for people who work for a living.

Tell China to enjoy that cup of STFU!

3. I'm a Canadian AND a Buddhist...

...and if Martin gives in to this kind of commercial blackmail, he'll have confirmed every fear that I have about him. BTW, this is the standard Chinese threat--they've made it to the US in the past as well.

One of the worst misperceptions about dealing with China (and one made by B*sh 41, needless to say), is that you have to be subtle and nuanced. Bullshit--the best foreign policy tool with them is a large blunt object applied upside the noggin. A nice cup of GFYS would do nicely as well.

4. screw that
I already purchased my ticket and can't wait to go. His appearance here in Vancouver originally sold out within a couple of days so they moved it to a larger venue and I was able to get a ticket. Most everyone here is super excited to see him and hopes china would just shut up.

I think the Dali Lama just wants to stock up on BC Bud :p
