The August 6, 2001 PDB "is being declassified". Predictions?
Key White House memo is being declassified

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In response to request by the 9/11 commission, the White House is now working to declassify the president's daily intelligence briefing -- known as a "PDB" -- from August 6, 2001, a document that was the subject of heated questioning during National Security Adviser Condolezza Rice's 9/11 commission testimony Thursday.

"We are actively looking at the declassification process right now to determine the possibilities of making the August 6 PDB available," said National Security Council spokesman Sean McCormack.

"We have every hope that it will be declassified, every intention to declassify at this time," said McCormack, who added that the White House is working with the commission to determine how to make it available to them and to the public. (Main story: Rice testimony before the commission)

1. Declassification?
I am a bit dismayed on this one. What exactly is the declassification process?

It seems to me that by decree that President could remove the classification of any briefing that was given to him.

Is what they are actually doing is removing portions, blacking out portions?

2. just another example of bush flipflopping
Either it should never have been classified in the first place (as is evidenced by rice's dismissive review of it yesterday) or bush won't hold to his "values" and maintain the sanctity of classified documents. As a former security officer in the Navy I find this trend troubling; however if bush had any moral values or integrity none of this declassification would be necessary.

The product the public sees will probably be awash with black splotches like

What did the +++++++++++ know and when +++++++ he +++++ it?

4. My prediction...
They're gonna make all sorts of noise about how they're "trying" to get it declassified, but neglect to actually do it.

7. No, I heard in some of the programs (I don't remember which)
yesterday that the report itself really is a list of warnings. But the important thing is that it was not paid attention to at all. It should have been a red flag to call people up and shake the trees... I think that is the term.

11. Trying - - - My Ass
You see, I don't understand the notion of the President "Trying" to get a document declassified. It implys that he has to go to some higher authority to get permission for the release. What higher authority? All the baboon has to do is order that it is declassified and by God, it is declassified. He sure as hell doesn't need permission from anyone.

6. They can clean up...
whatever they want and claim national security.

Personally, even one reference to hijackings, means they didn't do much of anything. They could have changed policies on the planes. Locked the pilot's doors, etc. if they thought there would be hijackings. They knew it would be something "very, very, damaging" or whatever the hell they had heard. That means you should have done something.

i wonder if this memo doesn't say sh*t and some other memo says a bunch, so they have focused everyone on this one to avoid releasing other memo's??

8. Here's mine:
Condi wouldn't have called it an 'historical document' if it didn't have at least SOME passages about OBL's prior bad acts. So they redact everything that isn't "historical" or in the public domain - "sources and methods" don't cha know. Remember, there is no appeal process except for public outrage - and the media whores will manage that.

12. spin, spin,spin
It will probably be very embarrassing to Bush.

They will release it AFTER Rove and Cheney Inc. come up with the perfect spin

and than they will send the White House drones out to EVERY talk show to spew thier lies.

...But even if the PDB says Osama called up Bush on the phone and said "we are attacking you on September 11th" this is what will happen...

40% of the "pod people" republican Americans will believe whatever the White House tells them to believe.

40% of us who see through the bullspit will scream bloody murder

and the other 20 percent will remain ignorant

and the media drops the story after a week or so.

16. alone, it means little, in contrast to PDB warnings clinton got is the key
the true issue is not simply what bush did or did not know or do, but what were the boundary conditions for his possible actions. this can be outlined by what clinton knew of terrorist warnings and how he responded.

if clinton was provided less hard info on terrorism then bush received prior to 911 yet clinton acted, and this action stopped terrorist attacks, then one can easily criticise how bush reacted to info on terrorism.

this is the mantra about bush:

"KNEW MORE, DID LESS"

it is the heart of richard clarke's criticism of the bush administration, and these facts once revealed, will break bush.

17. We must demand to see the original PDB as it was the day it landed
on or near Bush's desk. No more of these lies about security this and that. I don't want to hear it. It is we the American people who are being compromised in all this, not any gov't agencies. If we keep putting up with this shit, we deserve what we get.

Those documents are ours. We paid for them. Now let's get them over to Kinko's and have copies made and see what are in them.

No redaction acceptable.

Original documents only.

"Honest, here's EVERYTHING you would ever want to know." - But the press was a little different back then - those WWII GI Plan guys didn't put up with that kind of shit.

And the people so anaesthetized by such a constant barrage of lies and derliction of duty nobody knows what to believe anymore.

Who will be our Rosemary Woods with a finger on the erase button?

There needs to be some such really transparent and hilarious blunder for the people to rise up against this shit and throw those mobsters out ... once again!!

Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 02:26 PM by RobinA
it will go "thud." No one will care. If it were going to do any real damage they would have taken care of it long ago.

I mean, you're Dick Cheney. You're in the White House. It's 9/12. Terrorists have attacked the WTC and the Pentagon. Thousands have died. The nation is in chaos. You remember that memo that came out a month ago that said Osama was going to do something big inside the country. Everybody important saw it. What do you do? Shred. Delete.
