A real smug looking bastard, too, sitting up there with some little Vietnamese nail girl working away on his nails. The homeless old lady was hanging out next door next by the Starbucks, all dressed in black. Very weird scene. I wished I had a camera.

1. LOL - you've spotted a "metrosexual"!
I kid you not - I heard it on "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" - urban guys who get manicures, pedicures (and who knows what else) are now being described as metrosexuals.

2. I had an experience like that once...
I was driving on these back country roads visiting migrant labor camps in NC and there was a stretch of road with a curve in it and you could see a migrant labor camp that consisted of a couple of really run-down farmhouses and then just beyond the curve you could see the farmer's house which was a big beautiful brick house with a manicured lawn. The juxtaposition of the two so perfectly described the haves and have nots.

3. For the ultimate eye-opener
go to the Republican convention and watch the the people in the upscale hotels with their servants and scary-looking, heavily made up women in pink suits. It's surreal.

4. First I had heard of that term
OOOhh, could I go on a rant about people like this..

My SO owns a computer repair shop. Small town, NOT big money for us.But SO is happy and works for himself. He has this..this THING of a customer who says things like "I HATE having my 250,000 home in a 120,000 neighborhood" Here is the scary part..this man has gotten to be really close with my SO the past year or so. This jerk is starting to allude to no less than insurance fraud. Something about a boat worth 60 grand. He owes us a LOT of money, and SO wont press for more details on this boat scam, for fear of losing his money. I tell him screw the money, and take the dirty rat in for fraud, lest HE gets it for not telling. Personally, Id rather use blackmail, but I gotta be nice.

Just last night, SO reminded him of the bill he owes us, and then he calls my SO a RETARD. (what an arrogant SOB!) My SO promptly tore him a new one, but he hasnt called since. I told my SO that is what small claims is for, if he refuses to pay our bill as he promised.

Despite my utter contempt for this a-hole, and all others like him, I have every intention of seeing this rat-bastard go down.

On the other hand, we have been friends with a hugely successful business man in our area for years, and he and his family are great, down to earth people. They damn sure dont go around getting pedicures and calling people RETARDS! They are Repubs, Christians, and treat us with respect as we do them. We agree on NOTHING political or religious, but Id trust my kids with em anytime.

So I guess it aint the rich in ya, its the BITCH in ya!Look out, Mr. RETARD. Your number is about UP.

5. People like this think that they are helping
the poor by "creating jobs" for people like the nail girl wtih the pittance they pay.

This is why I favor somewhat confiscatory tax policies on the rich. They get off on that power too much, and love to strip people of their dignity.

6. On the other hand ...

He may be a lot like me. I am extremely competent. After some idiot spent two years trying to fire me, I finally quit. I then refused to return until they offered lots more money than I ever expected. I now make lots of money. And I have a pretty good time with it.

I also believe that I, and those like me, should not be getting a tax cut. In fact, I would dearly love to see more income tax and less other taxes (though I already likely pay more in income taxes than you hate-the-rich types earn).

I vote Democrat. I donate money to the DNC. I donate money to the ACLU. I donate to Rev Barry Lynn's Americans United thingy which name I cannot recall right now. I donate respectable sums to charity and do NOT take receipts. When I give money its 100% from me, not 82% from me and 18% from my fellow taxpayers.

I have shared my very valuable home with three different people who fell on hard times. One is still there because I just don't give a damn. One got on his feet after a year and a half and is now gone. And the other was tossed out on the street after only two weeks when I discovered he'd been stealing from me. $20 in quarters lost this guy a roof over his head. His girlfriend at the time assures me she managed to spend most of those at the casino he took her to before I discovered the theft.

And on an almost daily basis I ignore the pleas of homeless people as I drive by them in my expensive car wearing my expensive clothes (okay, excepting a couple accessories I mostly dress like crap, but I WOULD dress nice if I felt like it).

I can't take care of everybody. I've lived poor, and I've lived well off. Believe me when I say that well off is a heck of a lot more enjoyable.

7. I guess I'm just *half* of a bastard :-)
I'm sporting a really great pedicure given to me by a Vietnamese manicurist, but I drive a 97 Escort. I have a pair of Adidas purchased from a shoe store here in Chicago, and then a friend of mine who investigates sweat shops told me that they contracted out to Vietnamese companies that were employing children!
Surely I was being more exploitive when I purchased those shoes than when I went in to get my pedicure.

BTW, the nail place I go to charges $30 plus tips, and my manicurist was a charming young woman who is going to a local community college and would some day like to be an accountant.

8. You just got a pedicure because ...

... you wanted some cute little thing holding your hand. It's pretty pathetic when you have to pay $30 + tips to get someone to hold your hand.

I only pay $12 + tip to get a gal to run her fingers through my hair (while shampooing and cutting it). But she closed shop, so I need to find a replacement in the Ravenswood/Lincoln Square area.

10. Hey, I'm a straight woman, buddy!
If I wanted to get a cute guy to run his fingers through me hair...well I'd probably have to pay $50 bucks and he'd be gay...

9. Ten years ago
I consulted for a salon on the east coast, helping them with payroll software. I recall that one of the manicurists there (I think she was from Eastern Europe, but I can't remember for sure) earned nearly $70,000 a year.

12. stood next to a guy
while I was pumping gas the other day - some people just catch your attention. He was wearing sandals, which showed off his exquisite French pedicure. Whatever floats your boat, I guess...

13. Men who get pedicures?
I thought Leonardo DiCaprio was the only man to do that.
