For all the people here who don't like Randi Rhodes...
Randi Rhodes is on Air America from 3p-7p M-F Please don't listen...

A link to her show has been here on DU every day 3-7 since the first quarter DU fundraiser. Why were there no I HATE RANDI threads then.

1. I like Randi.......she's got ballzz. LOL, j.k
I love her fiery attitude, she don't take no guff. I also love her sarcasm, I'd love to see her go up against Rush in a 'debate'.

2. I decided to listen to her today
And while she is intense - I'm liking what she has to say.

And I'm outraged, too, so..... it's nice to hear someone else who is.

She's an important voice for our side. For those criticizing her, I submit that she knows better than we do how to succeed in radio.

22. She said "there are only two speeds in radio: boring or bombastic."
So there's her style in a nutshell. She doesn't let up for a second even when she has a waffling caller.

She said this to a women who called to admonish her for calling Condi Rice 'reptilian.'

Randi told her that she had yelled at a caller for calling Rice a gorilla because she didn't like the racial overtones. But she didn't see any problem with calling her a reptile.

So imagine her as an over-caffienated Bette Midler on a well-informed political tear. Good stuff. She gets lots of complicated info out fast, simple, and colorfully funny. Quite a challenge and she pulls it off.

Oh, yeah. She's also a veteran. Used to be a crew chief maintaining aircraft. Impressive, hunh?

26. And she's right
People who like well thought out arguments, reason and logic tend to read. Radio is for people who don't get their news from reading.

5. I don't listen to radio on the internet...
....and my area just got Air America.

I don't hate Randi Rhodes. I just don't personally find her a compelling radio presence and I refuse to listen to or heap praise on someone just because they are a liberal and tell me things I want to hear (none of which are revelatory or anything I dont' already think and/or are aware of).

19. Do you like Clarence Thomas?
It must be because he's black. You must be an angry racist freeper who poses as a DUer.

What a pathetic low-blow, unfair accusation.

From spending a day advocating verbal censorship, you've moved on to advocating that whoever doesn't like a particular talkshow host you like is a sexist and "probably" a disruptor -- therefore "probably" deserves being banned from DU.

35. Personal, as in anyone who does not agree with me and general,
as in those who really are sexist, trouble makers. The later group was what I thought she was talking about. But I bet she can speak for herself. That was just my "humble, personal" take on it.

36. Of course,
Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 04:14 PM by slavkomae
there are people out there who don't like Randi because she's a strong woman.

There are people out who are against Ariel Sharon because they're anti-semitic.

You can equally generalize both of these statements. I'm not that suprised when freepers do it, but when self-proclaimed liberals do it, I cannot possibly understand why they are liberals and if this is consistent with their overall ideology, I'm not sure why they call themselves liberals.

38. Well, I like her and I think it is great to have her voice in the mix.
I really have trouble believing that there are true liberals who are sexists and bigots. I can't see how that would ever apply, not in my idea and ideal of liberalism.

39. Good.
I agree -- I don't think a true liberal could be a sexist or a bigot.

And it's good you like her -- you have every right to, and I also think that she's a good voice in the mix; I just don't think that she makes a very strong case for liberal causes. But you know, that's a whole other discussion, that we can have without calling each other "sexists" or "freepers" based on our opinion on one talk show host. After all, true liberals don't make sweeping generalizations.

sometimes makes us nuts. That is what baby bush does to me and I can sure generalize about repukes because of it.

42. I don't think that's a good comparison.
If someone supports sexist policies, it's fair to call them on it.

If someone doesn't like a radio show, to call them sexist simply because the host happens to be a woman, is simply totalitarian.

28. I see...
so, now it's Freeper sexist Naderites? Splendid.

Maybe -- can you maybe be open-minded enough to imagine, just maybe -- some people have legitimate reasons of disliking a particular radio host? That not all of them are "afraid of a strong woman", that maybe their problem with Randi has nothing to do with her being female?

What you're doing is stereotyping of the worst kind, and in a way, it's parallel to sexism or racism.

31. I keep thinking back to that nader-randi exchange and how
it sparked all of this "spoken" disgust with Randi, so yeah, I'd have to say it has a sexist undertone. What if Al Franken had reacted that way? or Janeane Garofalo?

I don't get it. It has a "sexist undertone" because Nader is male and Randi is female?

I'm really stunned by this. I absolutely cannot believe that a liberal can make these kinds of sweeping conclusions. It's total verbal strongarming -- since Nader is male and Randi is female, you shalt only completely agree with Randi's way of handling the Nader exchange, or if not, you shalt be called a sexist, a Freeper, a Naderite. And yo momma shalt be called fat, too.

23. Actually, Ma'am
Most of the venom directed against Ms. Rhodes comes from splinter leftists, incensed at her denunciations of Wrecker Nader, and accusing her of hewing to a "not left enough" line. But of course, you are perfectly well aware of that, and have seen a good deal of that sort of attack directed against her in other venues than this one....

"It's quiet today in the old town of Tombstone."

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

8. With all due respect fellow du'ers....
With all due respect to the DU'ers who say Randi Rhodes is too "mean" or "sarcastic," her style is what's going to keep Air America around. Nice people don't last long on talk radio. If you think, as some people have said, she's like a Limabugh of the left, you shouldn't be listening to talk radio.

Randi rocks.

9. I got nothing against Randi
Re-posting observations from a locked thread:

I was on the air with Randi on April Fool's Day, and she was courteous and even joking with me. My advice to potential callers is to keep it relatively short, rehash the bare minimum (restating your name is usually unnecessary), and keep both the host and the radio audience interested. Above all, don't be nervous! It can be a little intimidating the first time, but don't let that scare you off from getting some experience.

In addition, don't offer to sing for Randi or read poetry - there's a lot of people trying to get through to her, so make the most of your time and stay on topic for the most part.

If you can't think of anything else to say, do what I did and bid Randi good-bye and hang up. Keeps the flow going and prevents her from having to hang you up instead. Sometimes hosts have to hang up on people anyway due to time or programming constraints - try not to take it personally.

Like the message, but not the messenger, Laura Flanders is more my style. However I do believe we need people like her to balance out against the likes of Limbaugh and Hannity.

I probably will not listen to her too often but a voice like hers, speaking for the left, is well overdue.

30. I didn't try her until now
that is for two reasons. One is that I am on Spring Break, so that I have vastly more free time. The second, is that fact she is not a national liberal person. I listened to her for several hours over three days. She seems abrasive and rude. She also seems full of herself. None of those are endearing traits. I didn't know of these traits until I tried her show.
