...a liberal will call in with a valid point but just may have some trouble phrasing it the right way and she just yells at them. Yesterday or the day before some guy called in, essentially agreeing with her on something and she ended up yelling at him and hanging up on him. It just blew me away.

I'm all for fighting and firebrand personalities. But I don't have to listen to that just because she's a liberal and I agree with her. It's uncomfortable and it's painful.

I'll take Franken's less radio polished approach any day.

I tried listening to her, I really tried...but I really couldn't stand the way she talks to her callers...

The way she treated Ralph Nader was just a magnification of the way (IMHOP)she treats almost all of her callers. I think she threw away a good chance to ask Ralph Nader the really tough questions that I, for one, have been wanting answers to. And when she did ask a good question (She asked him who he would work with, should he win, to implement his agenda, since the Democrats would be bitter and the Republicans would be, well, Republican), she wouldn't let him answer at all.

I like Garofolo and Franken better, because they have so far had a good dialogue with their callers and guests, while still making sure that they answered the questions that were asked.

So, while I'm glad that Rhodes has listeners, I won't be recommending her show to anyone. I just don't think that her kind of abrasiveness will convince anyone.

... is not a bitch. She is trying to make an interesting show. Callers are expected to be concise. Some of them are not able to, they may be nervous or they may be trying to veer into an agenda that is at odds with what they told the screeners.

Could Randi handle it a little more nicely? Perhaps. But people should expect this: when you are calling a radio show you need to be interesting. Dead air while you compose your thoughts is not acceptable.

Randi does not fit my definition of a bitch.

When I was on the air with Rhodes on April Fool's Day, she was courteous and even joking with me. My advice to callers is to keep it relatively short, rehash the bare minimum (restating your name is usually unnecessary), and keep both the host and the radio audience interested. Above all don't be nervous! It can be a little intimidating the first time, but don't let that scare you off from getting some experience.

In addition, don't offer to sing for Randi or read poetry - there's a lot of people trying to get through to her, so make the most of your time and stay on topic for the most part.

If you can't think of anything else to say, do what I did and bid Randi good-bye and hang up. Keeps the flow going and prevents her from having to hang you up instead. Sometimes hosts have to hang up on people anyway due to time or programming constraints - try not to take it personally.
