3. Liars figure and figures lie....
Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 11:30 AM by Viking12
"Two hundred seventy-seven U.S. soldiers have now died in Iraq, which means that statistically speaking U.S. soldiers have less of a chance of dying from all causes in Iraq than citizens have of being murdered in California, which is roughly the same geographical size. The most recent statistics indicate California has more than 2300 homicides each year, which means about 6.6 murders each day. Meanwhile, U.S. troops have been in Iraq for 160 days, which means they're incurring about 1.7 deaths, including illness and accidents each day."

Brit Hume, 8/26/03

P.S. Has he recently repeated this disgusting statistical lie?

4. He came up with some bogus math...
...to try and tell people that soldiers in Iraq had less chance of dying than being murdered in California. Brit Hume said that California, being the same size as Iraq, had 6.6 murders per day (among a population of 34 million or something) and that was higher than the 1.2 soldiers dying in Iraq daily (among a troop deployment of 140 thousand). See, he forgot to divide by the sample size for the true numbers, which would most accurately be stated in deaths per hundred thousand. The proper calculation would yield:

Chance of soldier dying in Iraq: 1 in 100,000 / day
Chance of being murdered in California: .019 in 100,000 /day

that's just rough guesses though, I'm sure some statistician has done the actual math...

5. In context, i think
he was talking about the flap over shrubs WMD "jokes" at the dinner party for journalists and how people were upset with the "jokes" because troops had died for nothing, he then dismissed the complaints about dead troops as described above...

9. 'Just get over it'
http://www.counterbias.com/news004.html

Brit Hume, a conservative news anchor on the right-wing Fox News Channel, continued his staunch support for the Republican Party when he told critics of President Bush--including families of American soldiers killed in his Iraq war--to "just get over it", on the 28 March 2004 edition of Fox News Sunday.

When asked on-air about the criticism Bush had received, from Democrats and families of American soldiers killed in Iraq, concerning jokes about non-existent WMD during a White House event,

Mr. Hume unsurprisingly defended Bush, calling his harshly-criticized jokes a "good-natured performance".

Mr. Hume then said of those critical of Bush's WMD jokes, including families of American soldiers killed on the premise that such weapons existed, that "you have to feel like saying to people, 'Just get over it'."
