Our actions in the last couple of days do not translate into fewer American deaths but, to the contrary, more unnecessary casualties. For every action there is a like reaction. It is as certain as a law of physics. More of our troops are going to die. That is what we are accepting when we accept the policy that we have invoked and carried out in the last few days.

Do not deceive yourselves into believing that we are like Rambo and our enemies will lay down their arms and surrender just like they do in the movies. Whenever they lose a loved one, and they have lost more than us, their resistance is only strengthened. That is the reality on the ground, in the blood, in the mangled bodies, in the hatred of our actions. Let us not feign surprise when more of our young people are butchered in that far off land.

his only child, is a Marine over there and he's just going totally crazy right now (don't worry, Dean, we're just friends who talk once in awhile now, nothing else!).

Our neighbor's son is there and she's going nuts. Both of them are against the war, were from the beginning, and want their sons home NOW!!!! They're going through hell, as I imagine every other soldier's family is. And they understand exactly what the poster is saying.

I sort of agree with you, but remember also that many of those GIs went into the military never expecting to fight in a war. They did expect some sort of job training and maybe a bit of focus in their lives. In some cases, the military offered them one of the few opportunities to have a better life than they would have had otherwise.

For those who enlisted because they are the "gung ho" types... those who were encouraged by their parents to "become a real man, I would hope they are having some serious second thoughts. But for those who simply hoped for the opportunities that they knew they'd never be able to access in any other way... for them I hope their parents will begin to speak out for more educational and training opportunities, maybe government-sponsored or maybe privately-sponsored, so that military service is not the only option for talented, but probably lower income young men and women.

Plus, I think that since we have parents of GIs here on the DU boards, we probably should keep our words soft and sweet, lest we later have to eat them. K?

It's not a movie where the good guy always wins and rides off with the girl. The Bush supporters and the supporters of this war need to slap themselves out of their delusional state.

Well, some who are in the military feel that it's an honor to die for the country. Their mindset isn't rooted so much in religious beliefs as a rule, but their allegiance to the country and "duty" is similar in many ways. I also wonder if winning is pivotal, because there are still some Vietnam vets out there who believe that we could have and should have won that war, and they are angry at the protesters they feel chipped away at the nation's resolve. I think you will find them over at the FReeper boards, wishing in print that we would simply "nuke Iraq" and be done with it.

I imagine that most of us here would be willing to defend the country if we believed that it was attacked without cause. I think most of us simply don't buy into the idea of American "entitlement."

16. I feel the need to clarify some sentiments that may be misinterpreted

This thread was addressed to those that have sons and daughters and other loved ones over in Iraq but continue to support George W Bush and the War in Iraq. I know that we have parents and kinfolk here on DU of GIs in Iraq but they are not supportive of Bush or his policies. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

However, for those parents that continue to support this madness, they should be aware of the reality of war and the manner in which Bush has just increased the hostilities toward their loved ones. It is all fine and dandy to wave the flag and be patriotic but there are innocents involved also.
