Canada: New Tories be getting help from Karl Rove and U.S. Neocons?
Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 02:32 AM by Cascadian
Though they are not saying it outright, it looks like general elections in Canada are not far off. The scandals PM Martin are facing could give fodder for the New Tories. I honestly wonder if Karl Rove and the neocon monkeys at the White House are bankrolling the right-wingers in Canada? I also wonder if the current Alliance/Conservative merger was engineered by the Republicans? Basically, Rove told the righties in Canada to get their "act together and unite". Though, I do not know what the Bush view of Martin which seems to want to an about face on what Chretien did and pull a Tony Blair thus making the Liberal Party "Tory Lite". ANy comments on this?

1. Republicans = corporate America
And Corporate America would like nothing better than to be in control of a few more countries. So yes, they could easily be bankrolling conservative support not only in Canada but other countries. The question is: will they find the populace fat, happy and ignorant, their recipe for success in America?

2. It didn't work in Spain.

This is why I like Europeans. They have their heads on straight and plus they like real actual food. Not chemicalized or gentically twisted. They also cherish their education system which is why the are clear thinking and democracy is encouraged there! I am sorry to say this but look at the train wreck in the making we have here. No wonder many people in the world identify America with Homer Simpson. It used to be Mark Twain and John Kennedy.

5. In a nutshell -- no
Certainly, the Repugs have tried to flex their influence in the past, but it is unlikely to have any affect this time round:

a) we have very strict campaign finance rules for both
hard and soft money
b) More than 80% of Canadians apposed the War in Iraq
c) A recent "If Bush was running in Canada" poll says he
would get a whopping 15% -- that's less than the our
separatist party.
d) Alliance/Conservatives are stilled considered the Klan
of the north.
e) The most trusted domestic TV and Radio outlets are
state-owned and controlled -- very liberal.

If the liberals lose seats in this election (and in MHO they will) it will be due to several gaffs during the transition from the old liberal to the new liberal cast. The loss of seats will not be enough to defeat them, but will serve as an unfriendly reminder "if you are going to be a liberal ... be a good one".

Paul Martin may not be the best prime minister Canada has ever produced, but then Trudeau set the bar very high for those that followed.

It has to be Alberta.

8. I've wondered the same thing
I also wonder if the current Alliance/Conservative merger was engineered by the Republicans? Basically, Rove told the righties in Canada to get their "act together and unite".

To tell the truth Cascadian I wondered the same thing. For the longest time we heard our pundits saying that differences between the more socially progressive Progressive Conservative Party and the Alliance Party were too far apart for them to easily unite and form a single conservative party. The recently elected PC leader was elected on the basis that he was all for keeping the PC party going and separate from the Alliance party. Then it seems something changed and before you could say, "Bob's your uncle" we had one conservative party and the leader of the new party was former Alliance leader and Bush ass-kisser extraordinaire, Stephen Harper (who would like nothing better than to be seen by the Bush gang as another Tony Blair type poodle, eagerly wagging his tail and leaping to obey his master's command).

I would not be at all surprised if GOP operatives perhaps in combination with Canadian/US business interests had a heart to heart, behind closed doors talk with the leadership of the Alliance and PC parties to let them know which way the wind was going to be blowing from now on and consequently the future course the Canadian conservative parties would be following.

9. I'm also wondering about Bush family involvement in the Mulroney win
Remember, there was some suspicious jiggerypokery behind the scenes when Mulroney ousted moderate Tory leader Joe Clark (whom the majority of his party had endorsed).

And didn't Ralph Klein have a personal audience with Dick Cheney a couple of years back?

I agree that this is something we have to watch. It would be foolish to assume that the Bush regime isn't interested in Canada, just because some of their front men project an ignorant image. In a way, that's the perfect cover.

11. If the New Tories win, this could be disasterous for lefty Yanks....
and potential draft dodgers who see Canada as a sanctuary from the emerging Fourth Reich (New American Century). I wonder if there is to be minority government, will Martin hold his nose and come to the NDP and plead for a coalition with Jack Layton?

13. That would be sweet. Anything that paints Harper's bunch as neo-cons
would be seriously damaging to them. I want to see more stories like this. They are neo-cons and the more they are linked to the Republicans, the more Canadians will be repulsed by them.
