Paul Bremer should be fired and recalled home
The allies have tried to present Sadr as an isolated militant but the evident strength of his forces, making attacks in all the main Shia towns, shows that Paul Bremer, the US civilian leader of the Coalition Provisional Authority, has miscalculated badly in seeking or stumbling into a confrontation with him. On 28 March, Mr Bremer suddenly closed Sadr's newspaper, al-Hawza. He then arrested Mustafa Yaqubi, Sadr's lieutenant in Najaf, which in turn provoked demonstrations and attacks on police stations and government buildings in Baghdad and southern Iraq.

The current violence in Iraq was triggered by one man, and one man only, Paul Bremer. Against the advice of the normally subservient Iraqi Governing Council, Bremer decided to confront the rising popularity of al-Sadr by shutting down a Shia newspaper.

Let's not forget that Bremer's first act after replacing Jay Garner was to fire the entire 400,000 strong Iraqi army.

Bremer should be fired and recall home to face a Congressional inquiry. The only thing that Bremer has yet to do to offend Iraqis is to bring a herd of pigs to the holy city of Najaf.

4. I concur, but I suspect the answer lies in the direction of firing/scoldin
/informing the person who appointed him in the first Place that his choice was a BAD one. The next person appointed should be a vast improvement.

Does the Prez needs practice in appointing? The Prez's score don't look so good these days. Bush should be seeking peepol wit smarts than wit "looks" or expediency. Competency is in order?

5. But...but...but...
THE GROWN-UPS ARE IN CHARGE...they sez.

Remember when Bush was going to appoint all those smart competent people and depend upon them...because he was so incompetent and dumb and uninformed that he had to compensate. Have ANY of his appointments been any good? Except Mineta, whose power all went to Homeland Security.

Bushie's Good Decisions about 13%

Bad Decisions 73%

Mediocre 14%

7. There is a very good article in the latest issue of
"The Nation" magazine, written by Naomi Klein. It is about Bremmer and the situation in Iraq. Excellent piece.

8. Isn't Bremer in Iraq?
DOn't worry. He'll be coming home sooner or later, the way things are going over there, perhaps in a zip lock bag.

10. You make very good points
I was discussing the very same thing with my husband tonight. We both agree that Bremmer isn't making these decisions on his own. I think he's taking his orders from Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz (who completely control Bush). It's time ALL of them are subpoenaed to appear before Congress.

Why didn't they bring Sadr to the table and ask him to be a part of the "democratic" process? He obviously has a huge following and shouldn't they be a part of it? This is yet another huge blunder on the part of our grossly incompetent administration. What are they going to do, kill them all?

13. I have a feeling that he won't make it home
Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 10:37 AM by Aidoneus
Judging from the way things are getting completely out of his control in his little fiefdom, he may be either end up running half-naked towards a helicopter-the-fuck-out-of-there in the middle of a sudden night, or swinging from one of the few streetlights that his occupation repaired.

The herd of pigs he maintains in the puppet council probably won't end up much better.

16. We may yet see Bremer boarding a chopper and high-tailing out
of Baghdad as the city falls to its residents.

"Go home," the French cops yell at crowds of Moslems thronging the streets. "What is it that you want?" And the voices shout back as one: "We want our freedom."
