Media description, or prescription that "Americans don't care"
about W's lies? Salon has a fairly interesting article today saying that we are a nation of scared sheep which makes us not care what lies Bush tells. The author also suggests that he is so immensely likeable and magnetic that people will forgive anything he does, unlike that harpy Martha Stewart.

What is so frustrating about all these stories is that these writers and talking heads act as if they are giving us objective descriptions of "Americans" who adore * and don't care what he does. When in fact they are prescribing to Americans what we should care about and how we should feel about *. Recently Cokie Roberts illustrated this in an absolutely disgusting way, saying last week on Morning Edition that "no one trusts the Democrats on national security" according to polls. That is such an outrageous lie, such a partisan construction, that she should have been fired on the spot. But then Cokie should have been fired a hundred times by now. She is *telling Americans* not to trust Democrats on national security, and pretending that she is describing us.

Another thing that is frustrating is reading all the DUers who buy this hype and blame "Americans" instead of the media telling them what to care about.

1. We should continue calling the ass-kissers on things every time

I told my NPR affiliate I was cancelling my annual pledge until Cokie was fired- the smug, nepotistic, condescending hag!

2. Great post! And great point!
The press told us how much we loathed Gore, and I personally know people who loathed Gore solely because they thought everyone loathed Gore.

As for w, I think if you asked anyone to just watch and listen to him for a full minute without thinking about how they were supposed to feel about him, they would loathe him.

3. If this is an exact
quote: "no one trusts the Democrats on national security"

It is a serious lie. To say "all" or "everybody" thinks or acts in given way without presenting facts to back it up is a serious lie when it comes from the mouth of a reporter, or talking head.

If she said that I would just repeat back: "no one trusts...?.....that is a pretty strong statement.."

It seems when cons (short for conservatives) are in power these kind of blanket, prejudicial statements are more prominent in the social milieu and media. Indicates a group think mentality.

People need to be called on it whenever possible.
