I don't see the point of polls on DU.
I wish there was a way to hide them like the lounge threads. Of course, everyone will say "Bush sucks." What's the point on a moderated membership board? Just my $0.02.

2. I suggested this as an upgrade at the next fundraising.
I'm thrilled not to see the lounge threads.

I want this next.

4. They serve many valid purposes
I for one like to know ratio of atheists to religionists. Also suspected rightwing swings in DU ideology can be tested by polling.

5. That is a serviceable qustion.
But there are too many like "Will Condi lie before Congress?" Either way I would like to have the ability to hide them. BTW, I'm an agnostic so maybe I will go to see :evilfrown:

3. Personally, I like them
They are usually silly, but it's a nice way to blow off steam and have a bit of a laugh with people you already know you're gonna get along with on some level.

So my answer is B and D and, oh yeah, Cheney is a dingbat.

Khash.

7. I suppose if every poll was: Bush, does he suck? Then you'd have a point.
Hoever that's not the case:-)

8. Hmmm - that's sort of more than one issue
.
.
.

1. You don't see the point

2. You'd like to be able to hide them

#2 is a valid wish I'd say, and may or may not be easy to do.

Hiding a forum may be easier than to hide all the polls in ALL forums?

Back to number 1.

Polls are for varied reasons.

Many are frivolous, but that's OK for the Lounge and Meeting Room I'd say.

However, in other forums, Polls can serve many purposes.

1. Other DUers may be able to find out how much their opinion is shared in that forum, on that particular issue.

2. Other DUers, especially newbies, may gain an idea of what sort of ideas and opinions are accepted, and in what proportion.

3. DUers can vent their opinion anonymously, and important distinction to responding to a post. Anonymity encourages more participation, and I think that is a plus.

I'm sure there are more "points/motivations" depending on the particular DUer,

but MY point is -

They DO serve a purpose for many members of Democratic Underground.

9. You *can* hide them.
You have to do it manually, but you can hide them yourself, by clicking on that little grey "x" next to the thread title in the topic listings.

:D
