daytime Soaps are too "steamy" says the FCC

http://www.washtimes.com/business/20040401-104949-2841r.htm

-snip-

Michael J. Copps, the FCC commissioner who has led the agency's campaign against adult-oriented radio programs, told reporters Wednesday that the FCC should review whether soap operas violate the agency's indecency prohibitions, according to Television Week, an industry trade publication.
Mr. Copps, one of two Democrats on the five-member panel, said he stumbled across a racy soap-opera scene while channel-surfing recently.

-snip-

Mr. Copps made his remarks after a National Association of Broadcasters' summit on "responsible programming." The daylong meeting was closed to the press, although Mr. Copps — one of several FCC officials who attended — met with reporters afterward.

-snip-

CBS representatives have denied published reports that the recent firing of "Guiding Light" producer John Conboy was linked to the new sensitivities about indecency. Mr. Conboy was dismissed in February, about a week after the show aired a scene in which a character pulled down her boyfriend's underpants, revealing his bare bottom.

-snip-

An FCC spokesman was unable to provide the number of complaints it has received about daytime television in recent years.

1. JEEBUS!
Jesus H. Christ, the soaps have ALWAYS BEEN THAT WAY, ALWAYS! WTF is this, a new goddamned puritanism? Excuse me, I have to pick my jaw up off the floor and put my eyes back in my head, now.

27. What bothers me most is that it's a Democrat who's leading this witch hunt
Michael Copps was one of the two FCC commissioners who traveled the country last year, holding town hall meetings on the Commission's proposed rules to loosen media-ownership rules even further. And now Copps wants to be the new millennium's Tipper Gore?! :eyes:

28. Exactly, Dean,
that really bothers me and pisses me off as well. DINOS who help repukes should just do us all a favor and formally switch parties. Copps should get this year's Lieberman DINO Award!

Those soaps are sacred. And the advertisers love 'em too.

Seems Oprah said naughty things on her show about sex, but I am sure that if Oprah was a Bush Pioneer, they would leave her alone...

4. Isn't it wonderful how the FCC
is watching over us. Just what all republicans aways hoped for. An intrusive government controlling our very thoughts! We should all write the RNC and thank them for making the government more responsible for our actions than our selves. This fits in perfectly with their sense of no personal responsibility.

10. I don't think we should send ANYTHING to the RNC.
But I do think someone on the Kerry team....not Kerry.... should make this well known! I bet there aren't very many women in this country that realize these guys are messing with their SOAPS! They'll freak! Women of ALL AGES are hooked on these things! and have been for decades.

This information needs to get into the headlines, in the editorials, and on the late night talk shows!

7. Here we go.
If we give these guys 4 more years, sex before marriage will be a felony. I wonder if they have a problem with women wearing "revealing" clothes and swimwear in public? My guess is that they do and they are working on a plan to keep as much skin covered as possible. Sounds like some other countries I know of.

...don't mess with the female population you flabby old men who wouldn't have anything to show if they pulled down your pants. When home ill, husband has been known to stare over the top of a magazine at a few good scenes. See, they have therapuetic value, too. It must be a joy living with these pricks of the FCC.

Copps is a "Democrat", so this gives Powell cover. WE will get blamed for this.

Pathetic, how the FCC figures out 'indecency' by channel surfing!

yes indeedy smite those dirty Soaps

It's almost as if every American TV didn't have a channel changer.

It's even almost as if every American can't shut off the TV and read a book.

I suppose the FCC would prefer to run cartoons all day... or even Christian broadcasting, heaven forbid! Or maybe that's the plan.
