Krispy Kreme and Duncan Doughtnut give 100% to Rep.
Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 11:23 AM by goddess40
http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0312-04.htm

Coca-Cola and affiliated donors-$807,000 to Dems -$1.74 mill to Reps
PepsiCo-$255,000 to Dems -$1.7 mill to Reps
Nestle- Dems $59,000 -Reps $208,000
Burger King- $20,000 to Dems- $111,000 to Reps

"Of the $26 million contributed by restaurant companies and food processors in the 2000 elections, 71 percent of the money went to Republicans. The National Restaurant Association, Philip Morris (with a constellation of trash food in its resume, such as Kraft), Outback, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, McDonald's, Waffle House, Pizza Hut, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Burger King, Cracker Barrel, and General Mills are among the top contributors on lists compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics that gave 77 percent or more of their money to Republican causes.

You probably never knew that doughnuts were a peculiarly Republican trash food. But in the current election cycle, Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme have both given 100 percent of their money to Republicans."
Makes them less tempting doesn't it.

Edit: The doughnut gang is the most 'honest' at least they don't throw a pitance at the left so they can say they donate both parties, hoping people will assume they give equally to each.

Kick the habit--you'll drop a lot of fat and feel healthier, since each can is about 40 grams of sugar. It was actually quite difficult to do, because one gets an emotional attachment to junk foods such as these, but it's the best thing in the long run.

16. I hate Krispy Kreme anyway....
I actually think their product is sort of tasty, but when it comes right down to it, they're just doughnuts.

What I've always hated about Krispy Kreme is the herd mentality they have engendered in masses of idiot consumers. People forming lines days before new stores open to be the first to get a freakin' doughnut? Give me a break. They're just DOUGHNUTS, people. It's not like they're some new, hot, trendy food item. But still, nattering suburbanites flock from the four corners of suburbia to snarf down something they could easily find at a locally-owned bakery or pastry shop.

Now I have even MORE of a reason to hate them. Thanks for the information.

They're sugar, fat, and flour woven into some sort of toral matrix that resembles a doughnut.

They're good, though, and addictive. I shan't be buying any more of them.

17. Hm...many Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme locations are franchises
The article doesn't really say whether these donors are people affiliated only with corporate or the franchisers.

I did a quick OpenSecrets search for Krispy Kreme, and, yes, everything that came up for 2004 was Republican. For Dunkin Donuts, it was mostly Republican, but Emily's List and Joe Lieberman (say what you will) also were on the recipients list -- the donors to those two causes seem to be individual owners.

One weird thing about Dunkin Donuts -- the massive numbers of franchisees, in various geographical areas, giving to the Republican Congressional Committee. I wonder if there was something coordinated there.

20. The low wage paying corps
love Republicans because they fight every effort to raise the minimum wage.

When the ratio of money is so dramatically different, there is no other interpretation than they are making token donations. It's all about appearance.

Anyone have the time to write them and ask them why? It's probably not worth it for the words that will come back, but they will know that someone is noticing - especially if it's mentioned that the information was posted on a Democratic discussion website.

23. Krispy Kreme is not that big of a deal...
It's just marketing. I found a great independently owned donut shop that used to be a Dunkin' Donuts. It's funky, non-gentrified, yet they serve good espresso and ask if I want coffee instead of water in my Americano, an option that had never occurred to me before despite my 25 years of dedicated espresso drinking. Their donuts are to die for...

Another independent in my area isn't as good, but I love the name: "Donut Connection." As in, "I need my fix, I gotta meet my donut connection, man." :donut:

25. Restuarant industry
Read "Fast Food Nation". It'll show the extent of contributions by the industry to Republicans. At their national industry conventions, the senior executives make it a priority that their goal is to keep wages low and regulations non-existent. The vast majority of food workers make a pittance for their work. I know locally (Chattanooga, TN), management positions at local fast food vendors advertise salaries of under $22K. Imagine that, being responsible for staffing, inventory, workplace safety, accounting, and even the physical safety of the restaurant and making nothing. They need unions and they need them now.

83. Especially in the restaurant and retail industry
I remember, as a kid, when larger retailers (Sears, JC Penney's, etc.) had adult salespeople who were helpful, polite, and probably earned a decent living at their job. Now, since the rush to the bottom on wages, I've had nothing but poor service from disinterested teenagers. It kills me that corporations and individuals expect sterling job performance, but don't want to pay enough so that the worker can actually afford both food and a place to live.

and in power in a big way with WH, House and Senate, this is to be expected. If the Dems held these offices you would see the same numbers in reverse. Of course there are a few exceptions to this rule but in politics, those who rule get the gold. The golden rule you know. That is why we have to get public financing of campaigns.

I suspect that if I lived in a less diverse region or in suburbia, I'd be more tempted to go to places like Pizza Hut or Red Lobster.

I find the local bakeries have fare that's much better in taste and price. KK's are way over priced. I also was more than a little put off when I went into a local store one night around midnight. Some places around here discount the price of the Krispy Kremes after 5pm and I was asking the KK route guy why this place didn't. He just sneered at me and gave some flippant answer. KK's are one thing I'll not induge in again.

Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 02:16 PM by mmonk
are that the vast majority of people won't. It would work if a large amount of customers did though since they give to repubs because they think repubs help make them money and that's what life is about for them. It would hurt some of their employees if they stopped making money and they have their share of Democratic employees I'm sure.

That's the problem with boycotts. And these little Democratic UNDERGROUND boycotts won't accomplish anything. The boycott has to be very public and very embarassing for the company. Only then will it make a difference. Otherwise its just business as usual.

Get Air America on this, or better yet CBS 60 Minutes.

I do wish we had Sonic in the North though.

54. Donuts and Repukes
About: "You probably never knew that doughnuts were a peculiarly Republican trash food. But in the current election cycle, Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme have both given 100 percent of their money to Republicans."

Actually I believe it. Donuts and republicans are very much alike: a disgusting combination of sugar-coatedness, starchiness and grease.

57. Not hard to give up these foods
I'm allergic to Pepsi/Coke and chocolate, so no problem there...

My last visit to the dentist instilled in me an aversion to sugary foods, so not eating Krispy Kreme is not a problem. Besides, isn't it strange how so many repukes look like the Pillsbury Doughboy--from eating all that sugar, I suppose--addicted to the drug, they are.

58. I couldn't care less
When I got to Pizza Hut or Red Lobster or Cracker Barrell or Outback I couldn't give a rats ass what their politics are. Not EVERYTHING in our country has to be politicized. Jesus.

62. real doughnuts
made every day in my little local convenience store on the rocky coast of rural Maine.

there is no way that Duncan doughnuts or Krispy Kreme can compare to these.

They are traditional--made from a recipe that has been handed down from mother to daughter over generations.

They are not airnuts--they are doughnuts, delicious, dense, and fried in lard.

You have not tasted real doughnuts until you eat these.

64. Okay, so what's left (pun intended)?
I'm about to hit the road on a a coast to coast move and I'll be eating at or avoiding a lot of these places. I will now be patronizing Sonic, but what about Wendy's and Subway? Who else?

I generally avoid fast food joints in favor of independents but while travelling that's not usually an option.

68. Good deal I hardly support any of those businesses!
I do find it hard to avoid Kraft and General Mills, BUT I buy generic whenever I can.

I don't understand going to Krispy Kreme OR Dunkin Donuts, doesn't anyone else have 500 little mom and pop donut stores around them like we do here in Texas? They are almost ALWAYS owned by an Asian family working hard for the American dream. Seriously, that's one area where the mom and pops are winning.

And we don't drink sodas at all. We drink water. McDonald's is shite, there's one Burger King anywhere near me and it is always nasty filthy so I don't eat there (besides I would just MUCH rather have something else if given the choice), Red Lobster has really gone downhill in recent years IMO, don't have a Cracker Barrel around, never go to Outback or the Olive Garden (please please please don't let Romano's Macaroni Grill be big gop supporters!), and Pizza Hut? We do Dominoes or better yet, Papa Johns (native bred pizza joint done good).

81. goddess40 ---Your "edit" to me is what I really liked...it's pissed me off
for years....like Enron giving Bush, well over a million dollars and Enron gave a bunch of Democrats something like a measly 53 thousand dollars and the whore corporate media ran with the WH & Enron official line of distortion...

And all of the republican owned corporate media reported it this way..."IN ALL FAIRNESS WE MUST REPORT ENRON MADE POLITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO BOTH PARTIES ALIKE, REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRAT".

Yes, you are absolutely correct...these corporations do it on purpose, if never questioned (and probably to the Democrats, with the least power to get things done).
