My one "teensy" gripe with Air America
I have honestly enjoyed every program that I listened to, but my suggestion to them would be to fill the "repeat time" with Local Liberal hosts...internet or otherwise..

Guy James comes to mind and Neil Rogers (someone posted a link, and I had never heard of him before)..

Use the down time, to help build a "B" team.. (not that the others are less talented..just less well known)

Al & Janeane will probably not want to do this forever, and they run the risk of being "personality driven" from the get go.. Most of the other famous hosts BECAME famous because of their radio persona..

It would be wonderful if they utilized the other talent out there who are hanging on by their fingernails because they are believers..

They cannot really claim to be a 24/7 network, if all their shows after 8 pm are re-runs..

With the internet capabilities, there has got to be a way for them to just "pick-up" the broadcasts that are already going on around the US.. even if it's a re-run of THEM.. Few outside of their smaller audience will have heard it..and it would help them build a name for themselves and the network..

Although re-runs are OK.. late night call-in shows are the best.. I have a theory that some of the most informed and creative people are NIGHT people.. Why not pick their brains with a live late night call in show..a la c-span open phones.. Freeps probably go beddy bye right after evening prayers at 7 pm .. Liberals like the nighttime :)

1. That's a good idea--I have to admit I don't understand the industry
well enough to see what makes the most sense from a business perspective, however

3. They need at least one more radio pro hosting
Randi Rhodes is the only real radio person and it shows. I have only two words for Air America, MIKE MALLOY.

4. You're Not ALLOWED To Have Any Gripes With AA
:)

But your suggestion is terrific.

I'd go so far as to scout for talent in colleges. Find entirely new YOUNG people.

9. Why gripe here at DU?
- Contact Air America and complain or tell THEM who you'd like to see in their lineup.

- One thing that many of you aren't considering that startup costs for something like this are tremendous. They're going to have to be careful for at least the first year and probably can't afford to expand their hosts much further until they establish a stable market share.

6. I think you're right..........
I think MSNBC and CNN lose listeners because they choose to not have political talk on weekends(at least not very much talk).I think it hurts them. Good idea SoCal! I hope they're reading.

7. I already asked them to line up
Mike Malloy, Peter Werbe, Thom Hartmann, Jim Hightower, and Amy Goodman.

Did the same with XM, who does not use the full AA line up. They ought to ditch Colmes and the repeats and replace him with those folks.

8. They also need to bring on some people like Dave Chapelle
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 07:56 PM by SoCalDem
or Chris Rock or Darryl Hughely.. Their hosts are very "whitebread", and Hell...even Whoopi might be into donating a few hours here and there.. They have the stage and the microphone..they better not waste it..:)

There are 168 hours of airtime per week.. I hope they don't fill lots of it with re-runs... That's one reason people hate broadcast tv..

12. Good Idea, creating a "farm team"...
...and as we saw on I.E. America, the weekenders/Night people would not have to go to New York to do their shows. Technology allows them to do shows from home or, as in the case of Guy James, just pick up the feed of his show as he does it. Guy and his producer would have to tighten things up a bit, but it is very feasable.

13. That's what I was thinking..a "farm team"....Grade-AAA
If they need someone for the wee hours, I'll even volunteer..

There are liberals out there who would probably VOLUNTEER their time, so money should not be the only issue..

For guys like Guy, it would be a bargain for them.. His overhead is not high for an outfit like they have, and he already has a "home" station.. Maybe with a bit of pitching, the station he uses, might even pick up the whole AA line-up...

Hey I can dream :)

Perhaps Air America can't currently afford to hire any more talent. Remember, they've only been on since Wednesday! It's going to take the network some time to catch on and attract more advertisers, i.e. revenue.

You know what this reminds me of? When Rupert Murdoch first went on with the Fox Network in 1987. It was called "Fox Weekend Television," because it only aired on Saturday and Sunday nights. But that certainly is not the case now!

What I'm saying is, if Fox could start out small and grow a lot bigger, so can Air America. Just be patient, my friend.

15. Well said!
I listened to almost every show too, and I must say there is very little advertising so far. That problem should be fixed soon I would think since everything I heard reported that the response to this new venue has been great.

16. You think they have to pay right off the bat?
Nope. Guy James doesn't get paid and I bet Malloy would do it sans cash for the opportunity.

Obviously there might be studio issues but Guy could fly to NY (to use their studio) three times a week and pay less than he's paying now for one day on WINK AM.

if necessary.. Of course NYC could be fun too :)

I have written several times..Maybe they will think on it :)

20. How often will Malloy be on tv??I looked for it, but
it must not be on yet.. I just wish he was not with Boortz.. This "share the stage" crap bugs me..

Did you See Franken on Nightline.. Two against him, and he hardly got a word in..

Today when Garofalo was interviewed, she was alone, and it was a great interview.. Christianne Amanpour interviewed her..

21. They need to do this
And I'm sure they have it in the plans down the road. That is, if they are smart.

I doubt the current lineup will be the exact same six months or even a year from now. They need some talent to be ready to step up to the plate.
