Tasmanian Governor Attacks Bush Doctrine.
"The former UN weapons inspector and now governor of Tasmania,
Richard Butler, was at the center of controversy yesterday after
accusing George Bush of reserving the right to "beat the living
daylights" out of any country regarded as posing a threat."

Okay, Tassie's a small island state of Australia, and I admit I
don't particularly care for Richard Butler, but this will unfuriate
Howard and Downer, and won't exactly delight the Bush team.

Onya, Richard.

1. The Mood Is Changing in Oz
I talked briefly with South Australia's energy minister, Mister Conlon, at Global Windpower 2004 Wednesday and he indicated that John Howard is facing some serious political backlash over his support of the Bush Administration. He didn't elaborate in the brief few minutes we spoke, but I sensed he was not unhappy with developments.

I jested with him, saying that if Bush got a second term, would he help my emigrate to South Australia?

2. I also think things are changing here.
Mark Latham really took Howard by surprise, and he hasn't recovered.
Howard has always been rat-cunning, but lately he's stumbling, and
is being continually wrong-footed by Latham.

I suspect that even his own party doesn't really like him, but
they stuck with him because he knew all the political tricks and
was seen as a winner when Labor had nobody credible to challenge
him. Suddenly, it's all coming unstuck, and it's a joy to watch.
