Iraq was invaded 'to protect Israel' - US official

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Front_Page/FC31Aa01.html

Iraq under Saddam Hussein did not pose a threat to the United States, but it did to Israel, which is one reason why Washington invaded the Arab country, according to a speech made by a member of a top-level White House intelligence group.

Inter Press Service uncovered the remarks by Philip Zelikow, who is now the executive director of the body set up to investigate the terrorist attacks on the US in September 2001 - the 9/11 commission - in which he suggests a prime motive for the invasion just over one year ago was to eliminate a threat to Israel, a staunch US ally in the Middle East.

-snip-

Zelikow made his statements about "the unstated threat" during his tenure on a highly knowledgeable and well-connected body known as the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (PFIAB), which reports directly to the president. He served on the board between 2001 and 2003.

-snip-

In his university speech, Zelikow, who strongly backed attacking the Iraqi dictator, also explained the threat to Israel by arguing that Baghdad was preparing in 1990-91 to spend huge amounts of "scarce hard currency" to harness "communications against electromagnetic pulse", a side-effect of a nuclear explosion that could sever radio, electronic and electrical communications.

if that doesn't raise goosebumps......................

1. I think what he means to say is: Saddam posed a threat to zionism
or rather, that he posed a threat to the expansion of zionism throughout the region.
The so-called "Greater Israel."

2. Saddam always kept alive the dream of riding into a liberated Palestine
as a new Nebuchaneezer, astride a horse (or tank) to the jubilation of the victors over the crumpled and burnt bodies of the conquered. He had street long murals painted of this for his numerous parades and other egomaniacal celebrations. No secret here. And EVERY neighboring countries corrupt leaders secretly dreamt of that day, while still fearing his madman ravings, until he was brought down by the U.S. military. Hatred is so blind that it forgets the human costs. These facists hate Israel more than they love their own people.

I support STRONGLY Saddam's ouster - regardless of WMD - and noone, including the UN was ever going to lift a finger about it. Now Tax Cuts, Environmental Disasters, and mean-spirited government torques me off just as bad so that's why I am here but in NO WAY do I want the bad guys to beat us in Saddam's former country. I bet most here feel that way.

Oh - I'm not jewish, either.
