WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Secret Service will oversee security at the Republican National Convention in New York, which is scheduled for the week of August 30, 2004, within days of the third anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Wednesday his agency is designating the convention a National Special Security Event. That puts the Secret Service in charge of designing and operating a security plan and coordinating with state and local law enforcement "to prevent terrorist attacks and criminal acts," the Homeland Security Department said.

The Democratic National Convention in Boston, scheduled for the week of July 26, 2004, received the security designation in May.

1. and will they be doing the same for the Dem convention?
if not, then this is a huge problem.

My tax dollars should not be going to provide security to a wholly partisan political event. Sorry.

7. Clintons still get Secret Service protection.
I believe all former Presidents and First Ladies get protection.

9. For the record
... the former President receives protection for life. The wife and immediate family get protection for one year after he leaves office. Hillary (and maybe Chelsea) received extended protection as part of an executive order that Bill Clinton signed in his final hours in office extending their protection beyond that one year. In addition, the Service routinely reviews current threat levels to determine whether protection continues.

11. minority leaders of House & Senate
possibly some others as well depending on need (what do they know that people would want them dead for).

Daschle will likely keep it regardless post or no post due to the anthrax attack.

All ex presidents have it for life. Not sure about surviving spouses.

8. ROFL!
That was exactly what I thought when I first saw that topic: that it was SS as in the Nazis.

5. Wait for this....
Because of the heightened security, no protesters will be permitted in Manhattan. "Special" first ammendment zones will be set up in each of the other buroughs.

10. I don't have a problem with this, I really don't
From the same article:

The Democratic National Convention in Boston, scheduled for the week of July 26, 2004, received the security designation in May.

Besides during the Democratic Convention in Chicago in 1996 the Secret Service in charge. Unlike the WMD issue this IS much ado about nothing.

12. I disagree
The Secret Service will attempt to use their mandate to essentially ban any protest within miles of the convention. If there is not a substantial legal challenge and civil disobediance against any attempts to limit peaceful protest, we might as well all pack up and go home.

13. But this is nothing new
The SS has always been involved with security for conventions. . .and one there is a Democratic nominee he receives SS protection.
