Merrillville schools ban pink clothes

Associated Press
March 30, 2004

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. -- Officials have banned pink clothing for the remainder of the school year out of concerns that the color has become associated with gang activity.

Administrators last week told students at the city's high school and two middle schools to avoid wearing pink clothing or accessories, said Michael Berta, associate superintendent in the Northwestern Indiana district.

"There is no evidence of gang activity. But because of the growing use of the color pink we decided to be proactive. Girls and boys are supposed to avoid wearing pink," Berta said Monday.

None of the district's 6,500 students have been disciplined for wearing pink, he said.

Berta said the issue came up at a recent administrator's meeting when a principal remarked that there were more students wearing pink. "Not only were there more kids wearing pink T-shirts and pink hats, but also pink shoelaces, which was unusual," he said.

Clothing retailers said pink is a popular color in current styles.

"About 30 percent of my items for this season are pink. It's 'in.' I have pink in every shade," said Amanda Zipko, owner of Amanda Gayle's boutique in Schererville

1. WTF?
So does this school ban Red and Blue clothing because of its KNOWN gang association (Bloods and Crips)? Sometimes this knee jerk reaction to problems are just silly on its face. Its like the school that suspends students for taking Tylenol or giving another student one for violating 'Zero tolerence drug policys'

3. I saw this too - I think it is hilarious
Probably stores are selling more pink because it is spring. Eh?

I think it would be a pain in the neck if I had gone out and bought a few pink things "About 30 percent of my items for this season are pink" and then couldn't wear them.

It seems worth a protest just on the princicle of over-regulation.

4. No, fashion trends do not equate to gang activity
and I honestly can't see any gang choosing pink as their color...however there are certain colors and fashions that are associated with specific gangs. THe school is overreacting but had they done nothing and it turned out to be a gang activity indicator then they would get castigated for not taking action.

Being a teacher/school administrator is a thankless job, and they are not paid enough to do it.

7. Those were some mean ladies too!
Seriously though. When I was stationed in Germany I was also a Boy Scout leader. I had to talk to my kids all the time about the "gang look" they were cultivating. Used to tell them all the time that if they got off the plane in the States wearing the wrong "uniform" they might not make it out of the airport alive.
