White House internal polls must of been real bad for Rice to cave
There is no way Rice would of testified under oath in public if there internal numbers were not showing troubling signs. But now let the fun begin.

1. This was my first thought when I heard last night
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 11:01 AM by Gman
that it was being considered. There's no doubt the polls played a part in the decision making process. If they thought there was no damage they would just sit and smirk.

It makes me smile that they know they could be in trouble if she doesn't testify. There is hope and we continue to prevail.

4. Wish I could share your optimism...
...I sense a smokescreen. Rove just doesn't let things go this easily.

7. Yes, Rove is very smart
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 11:26 AM by Gman
so I've got to figure Rove's input was key in this decision. These people don't do anything they don't think they have to do. I really think Rove told Bush he doesn't really have a choice at this point if he wants to put this to rest anytime soon.

They've tried everything for over a week now from unleashing the attack dogs to Condi on the TV talk shows starting Monday morning a week ago after the 60 Minutes piece. By the end of last week it was worse with the fact that Condi would talk to TV and radio but not the commission.

The Clarke story is outliving the normal news cycle. It appears to be snowballing. That's why I'm sure this was a purely political decision. This is an attempt to put this to rest and try to make people think they have nothing to hide. After all, the entire Bush election campaign revolves around this single issue. Without holding theirselves up as champions of 9/11 they have absolutely nothing. The convention in NYC will appear even more shallow especially considering the planned massive protests.

---on edit---

I also think the way they will handle this is to postpone Condi testifying (scheduling conflicts, etc) for as long as possible before the commission has to make its report in July. They may be hoping that as long as she's expected to testify it will put this on the back burner just as they have been successful doing with the Plame investigation or the Anthrax investigation.

Let's see what happpens and how soon. Right now, I can see her waiting until May to testify. These people count very heavily on people's short memories.

14. DU'ers love to overrate Rove
I have seen nothing but mistakes from their political operation ever since there has been the least bit of pressure on them. They are good at smearing but i think their talents end there. Everyday they have shown how poor they are at playing defense.

20. Point well taken...
yes, they are the best at smear and Rove has a very long history of accomplishments in smearing.

But I think this one was a no-brainer.

19. I agree totally
Karl Rove may be slimy, but he's a cunning old man. He certainly wouldn't allow something this big to go forward unless he was packing a smoke bomb to jump out in case of emergency.

3. I hope she really does a bad job when she testifies
CNN is already reporting that Bush's poll numbers are improving compared to Kerry

http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/03/30/election.main/index.html

Letting her testify will make Bush look great. He can claim "see, I have nothing to hide" and Condi can lie her !@#$* ass off. Right now, it is her word against Clarke's word unless someone else has the guts to come forward.

It seems that a lot of people are blind and deaf when it comes to anything negative about King George. They just believe those liars and crooks.

5. Pundits/Repigs have been saying....
'Condislezza can eat Clarke alive. She's the best spokesperson, articulate, truthful and ...trustworthy.'

Trustworthy must mean that she can be trusted to tell lies to benefit the bush criminals.

Bush is getting serious opposition from within the GOP. Nixon's goose was cooked when Barry Goldwater turned against him.

8. Yeah, it's bad when your hand-picked committee is saying
"Hey, it's really starting to look like a cover-up."

Especially when the Repukes screamed for years about "It's not about the sex, it's about the lying and the coverup!"

10. I doubt she will lie.
Remember, the PUBLIC thinks you are only guilty of a lie if it's under oath! Of course that's not true, but that's what people think. You will hear a lot of double speak and answers that don't answer the question asked, but I don't think she wil actually lie. She is a very loyal minion but very few if any are will to do time for purgery.

11. Bad timing
From a PR point of view, they should have announced this on Friday, thus taking the wind out of Clarke's weekend TV appearances. Now it comes out on a Tuesday, basically bringing this issue out for yet another full week.

And Rove is supposed to be a giant PR expert???

13. How loyal is she? Will she commit perjury to protect her boss?
How could they have even hoped that an unsworn secret testimony could have possibly held the same weight as the testimony by Dick Clarke. You can't fight sworn eyewitness testimony with hearsay.

She will get an audience. She will be well rehearsed.

Will she tell the truth. Will they ask her about the Aug 6 briefing?

Will the White House provide the questions to be asked. If so, will the commission ask the questions as they are worded so that the memorized answers can be given?

Sometimes the same words can have different meanings such as "The President has been a member of 'Skull and Bones'" can either mean "he was once a member" or "he was once was and still is a member."

Even Yes/No answers can be skewed -- "Is the grass green?" was asked to a neighbor's child as a question on an intelligence test. His answer was, "No." It was winter and the grass in his yard was brown.

It is important that the commission not ask ambiguous questions. It is also important that the commission not accept ambiguous answers.

15. This is NOT Rove, it's Karen Hughes!
She's back and she's got a better handle on using the media to soften the BushCo image.

You had better believe she made this call, not Rove.

I also think we shouldn't get our hopes up on this. Rice will come out of this like Colin Powell after the U.N. Iraq WMD threat propaganda extrtavaganza. Even when she lies her ass off, the media will play it as a great "performance". The schmucks will buy it, hook, line, and sinker. We've been down this road before. Sad, but true.

She's the one who softens his image, the soccer mom appeal, etc. She would call this shot! Rove, is the master spinner, the attack ads, propaganda feeding to the masses.
