Is Clarke's Apology 'The Thing' ???
I'm watching several shows this week(end), as have most of you all, and the barely managed anger exhibited by right wing pundits over the 'Apology' is telling.

From Brit Hume's' observation that Americans recently have developed a proclivity for taking on 'victim status' when their loved ones are killed in a New York high rise, or a skirmish in Mosul, to the dozens of implied 'How dare he!', ya gotta wonder.

I only ask this, because we know the White House had the Clarke manuscript for several months and must have had a counterattack prepared.

I'm wondering if Clarke's apology is what threw them for a loop.

Anybody?

1. Yes, the apology 'inoculated' Clarke
against the attacks by the Repukes because it endeared him to the 9/11 families there, for one thing.

5. I'm not sure if I agree..
that it inoculated or endeared him.

I do agree with Tina Brown's assesssment on her show that it was a manly thing to do. As a result the GOP, which thrives on the dual image of liberals as sissy cowards and conservatives as macho manly men, now looks more like the proverbial cockroaches when the lights are turned on.

It was a very good strategic move. The White House is exposed for what they are - ccowards who try to foist blame on everyone and take responsibility for nothing. They look weak.

2. By all means, he not only accepted some responsibility for himself, he

dumped even more responsibility (and lack of concern) on the Oval Oriface.

edit: Totally screwed that sentence up.

3. the splendid tip of the proveribial iceberg

but that certainly set the tone and has made a LOT of folks TAKE NOTICE as one is prone to do when hearing something new... for the FIRST TIME since that horrid day.

the poor families, i can not imagine what they must be going through but i can certainly understand their collective gasp at finally hearing ONE PERSON from our woefully CORRUPT gov take RESPONCIBILITY.

i am not suprised he is a carreer official nor that he is a republican - he may just save their reps - just GRATEFUL :toast:

:hi:

peace

4. Yes - Tonight tweety may have revealed the "WH plan to destroy Clarke"
Edited on Mon Mar-29-04 10:51 PM by jean
Tweety and his R congressman guest pounded on Clarke for releasing the book right before the 9/11 Commission hearings - saying this was proof of his money-grubbing intent.

Could this be the WH plan? They decided to hold the book long enough (so the publishers would likely release it right before the hearings) to claim Clarke's motive is not honorable - he only wants to make money on the book?

Clarke told Russert yesterday he intended it to be a "Christmas book" but had no control over the WH process.

6. I think you may be right
about that. It was the first "talking point" they all spewed.

8. Nope. The Bushies wanted the book released after the commission.
What many here seen to forget is that the WH was FORCED to extend the commission's timeline; they thought they could hold onto it. Clarke said that they had it for three months and they probably could have held onto it AFTER Clarke's testimony.

lets face it... they need ALL the talking points they can get - time the release to make it look like clark is on a marketing campaign - their bloody hands on.

7. I wonder if a "Bush Apology" was going to be the October Surprise
Perhaps Rove was holding off on this until October, then Clarke pulled the rug out.

10. Humility and responsibility are alien concepts to Bushco and....
the idiot talking heads of the media. They have no idea how to respond.
They sense Clarke has trumped them, but they haven't got a clue how.

11. BINGO !!!
You've put your finger on it I think!!!

Whatever part of their former humanity that lies drugged and dormant, has been stirred, but not yet comprehended.

They feel the need to strike back, but aren't sure what's pissin 'em off!!!

Great call!!!

12. I'm with you. They were trumped big time
and they have no fucking idea how to respond except to show themselves as the nasty disgusting excuses for human beings that they are.

Clarke is the most savvy politician I've seen in years and years, possibly ever.

Because they now can't also apologize, they'll look like they're aping him (which they would be).

I believe it was heartfelt, but I also feel it was a genius move of political acumen.
