Indiana/Thomson
MARION, Ind.—Thomson has announced it is closing its television picture tube plant in Marion, cutting 990 jobs. The company says they are closing the plant because consumers have been switching to different televisions that don’t use the type of tubes Thomson produces.

BellSouth
BellSouth has announced plans to eliminate 778 jobs in nine states during its second quarter. The cuts will be mostly technical positions, including residential and central office repairmen, dispatch assistants and collections representatives. BellSouth says the cuts are necessary to reduce overall operating costs and compete effectively.

Texas/Centerpulse
AUSTIN, Texas—Zimmer Holdings Inc., the new parent company of Centerpulse Orthopedics Inc., is closing its Austin manufacturing plant. About 550 employees will lose their jobs when the hip and knee plant production is transferred to Zimmer’s plants in Indiana, Switzerland and Puerto Rico. Zimmer chose to close the Austin plant to streamline manufacturing costs.

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla.—Perdue Farms Inc. hopes to save money by closing a chicken processing plant in Defuniak Springs. The company wants to shift production to Georgia where its operations are more efficient. The closure will mean a loss of 392 jobs for the area.

Tennessee/Vought Aircraft Industries
NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Vought Aircraft Industries is planning to close it Nashville facility, dismissing 1,000 workers. The aerospace company has been consolidating operations to Dallas, where its headquarters is located.
