CNN 4-30-2001, State Dept official says too much focus on Al Qaeda
Edited on Mon Mar-29-04 12:56 PM by belladonna
This is a transcript from Inside Politics from 4-30-2001, the day that the annual terrorism report was released. Didn't see it posted anywhere, so here it is.

"The State Department officially released its annual terrorism report just a little more than an hour ago, but unlike last year, there's no extensive mention of alleged terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden. A senior State Department official tells CNN the U.S. government made a mistake in focusing so much energy on bin Laden and "personalizing terrorism."

Gee, looks like yet MORE proof that they're lying their asses off now. :grr:

1. Nice find. e-mail it to CNN. Maybe they don't have time to
read their archives, or maybe an eager-beaver might see it.

6. Nah, the FBI and the CIA were too busy trying to find out
if Clinton/Gore could be arrested for the trashing of the White House, the "porn in the copying machine", and the Marc Rich pardon.

13. a distinction could be made
between osama bin laden (on whom there was too much focus) and al qaeda in general.

the point could have been that by focusing on osama, other, just as dangerous, factions could flourish in the background.

really, i don't think this report has much to do one way or another about whether the bush adminstration was taking the terrorist threat seriously.

15. A distinction couldn't be made by anyone who. . .
Edited on Mon Mar-29-04 01:32 PM by ET Awful
has read the report and seen that the entire organization only warranted a single paragraph or so in the report.

17. Yep, that's where we orginally saw it
But no link, so we started looking around. Found the actual report on CNN, but my friend finally found the transcript itself with Google.

18. And Judy called him "alleged terrorist mastermind"
Alleged?

It looks as though the media also didn't believe Clinton was doing the right thing by focusing so much on Bin Laden and al queda.

That's why they all ganged up on him when he tried to bomb bin laden in the training camps and said he was trying to take the attention off of the monica thing. They called it a "wag the dog" bombing as did the republicans in congress.

19. Another CNN link HERE!
"Unlike last year's report, bin Laden's al Qaeda organization is mentioned, but the 2000 report does not contain a photograph of bin Laden or a lengthy description of him and the group. A senior State Department official told CNN that the U.S. government made a mistake last year by focusing too tightly on bin Laden and "personalizing terrorism ... describing parts of the elephant and not the whole beast."
