Why I think we need to allow Freepers and Fundies to post here.
Edited on Mon Mar-29-04 09:19 AM by DarkPhenyx
Or we at least need a small sub forum for them. I really want someone who can explain this to me. It's from today Top 10 Idiots.

9 Dwight Holcomb religious nut unconstitutional
Now that the terror of Janet's Breast has started to fade into history, the self-appointed protectors of public morality have again returned their attention to their favorite pastime: Banning books. At a recent meeting of the Bartow County, Georgia, Board of Education, Rev. Dwight Holcomb of the group Crusaders for Christ requested that a number of books be removed from the local schools' reading list. Among the books that the group wants banned are Of Mice And Men, the story of a retarded man and his caretaker friend during the Great Depression, and To Kill a Mockingbird, about a small-town girl and her father, a white lawyer defending a falsely accused black man in the Jim Crow South. Clearly, these books represent a serious threat to the very fabric of American society. Holcomb told the board of ed, "You're going to answer to God Almighty for your decision." Hey, that goes for you, too, pal. Next time you feel like ramming your values down someone else's throat, consider this: If you don't like a book, don't read it!

They could also explain why homosexuals marrying threatens marriage, and all the other, no substantiation necessary, statements they make.

<on edit>

FOR THE MODS: I'm not attempting to question the wisdom of the Forum owners, nor attempting to make a change in policy. Simply starting a discussion of the logic, or lack there of, behind RW pronouncements and statements.

4. But none where you can actually ask the question.
Every other place you get banned 5 sec after posting. I seriously want one of them to be available to answer the "why" question. I really do want to understand.

10. Capitol Grilling
No segregated troll pit, but you can mix with the troglodytes freely without fear of banishment. Good luck.

15. Sure
But that's not a website for the Gawd-fearin' love it or leave it crowd. DP can get what he/she's looking for at CG -- they've got everyone from evolutionary throwbacks like TLBShow to our own liberals, seventhson and njcher.

14. Cool! Thanks!
Might try going back to ConservativeUnderground too.

Unfortunately it's very hard to find people willing to give actual reasons as opposed to just more rhetoric and hyperbole. Could be because with so many arguments, from both left and right, there simply isn't anything else supporting them.

Slim chance of finding anything more edifying. It's Usenet with a prettier interface. Maybe you should look into mailing lists.

19. Unfortunately true. So is the media these days.
Sound bites and spin. Dumbed down facts that are so dumbed down they aren't even accurate anymore. Statistics and analysis instead of information and data. *sad sigh*

Tell me again, when did you say the revolution was going to start?

3. I would like to know
Considering that the phrase "Under God" was added to the pledge of allegiance in, what, the 1950s (or was it just after the Civil War?), why is it such a sacriledge to take the phrase out? Or maybe change it to "Under Krishna" or "Under Buddha" or "Under Allah"...

8. I suspect that their objections to these books is due to sexual material
Not anything really objectionable in either book, but both deal with sexual violence. Lenny holds a woman too tightly, not knowing his own strength, and accidentally kills her. Tom Robinson is accused of rape and there are insinuations regarding the nature of Mayella Euwell's relationship with her father. Bob Euwell tries to get even with Atticus by trying to murder his children.

I read both these books in high school and have no problem with them being taught at that level. Of course these books aren't appropriate for kids under 13 (in a classroom setting, parents can decide for themselves as far as independent reading goes), they deal with violent themes that not every kid in that age group is ready to handle. "To Kill a Mockingbird" should be mandated reading for high school kids, however, along with "A Tale of Two Cities" and other classics.

9. Bad idea
Boards that have done this have found themselves overrun, thus destroying the board's identidy as a liberal site. It gets to be more than the moderators ability to control. I do not want right wingers to feel "comfortable" here. They run the whole US government, and most of the media, we can have one website.

Only bad executions of ideas. War on Drugs and Terror being two prime examples.

18. I don't think those fundies and extremist really want to discuss
Religious extremist and right-wing nuts would like to convert us to their way of thinking. Their goal is to make us see our "errant" ways and to repent. They think they are right and we are wrong. They go to heaven and we go to hell.

I don't think they would pay attention to any points we make, as valid they may be. I don't think this kind of screwed up mindset would lead to any fruitful discussion.

So, I don't see the point to even waste my time with such "discussions".

20. Every once in a while we win.
Even one victory w/o blood is worth the effort, IMHO. Also it gives us a better insite into their thought process. As Sun Tzu said "know your enemy as you know yourself and you will always be victorious".

26. Exactly. Giving reasons means it is OK to question
And it would be evil to help someone question what is inerrantly true.

The fact you have to ask the reason in the first place means you are already evil

30. I used to go to a board where there were both.
The fundies and wingnuts got so loudmouthed that most of us liberals left.

Why bother, when it is just a board? I learn much more here that is useful in my real life. We want to change things out there, not in ther rarified atmosphere of the Internet.

I still go back there when I have the stomach for it. I just like to get a feel for their new propaganda rants, so I know how to answer them.

Life is tough enough without arguing with freepers. I save my ammo for LTTE's and discussions with RATIONAL people.

Thank God for DU!

22. At least he picked perennial favorites
Of Mice and Men and To Kill a Mockingbird usually make everybody's list at book-banning time. ;-) Perhaps it is the sexual overtones.

But the gasp! the left engages in book banning too. Calls to kick Huckleberry Finn out of the library usually come from the left. Some short-sighted soul gets his shorts in a bunch over the portrayal of grammar-challenged, n***** Jim, forgetting that Jim, is the most intelligent adult in the book.

I wonder if anybody here at DU has asked to have a book removed from the library. Likely not, but you never know.

24. It's funny, innit?
In this age of Grand Theft Auto and MTV's Jackass, American Psycho and Turner Diaries, it's the hoary retreads that always float to the top of the shitlist. Maybe it's pushback for being considered watersheds in American literature and the cultural zeitgeist. They can be easily targetted for the banality of crudity and "takin' the Lord's Name in vain" without bothering with their deeper import.

civil conversations. They also have plenty of places to voice their opinions they don't need to bring that gabarge and misinformation here.
