Is China about to invade Taiwan?
Due to the recent protests and instability in Taiwan, might China take advantage of the situation and invade Taiwan?

I have a real bad gut feeling something real bad (like World War III) will start soon. :scared:

If China invades Taiwan, we are bound by treaty to fight China. China has threatened to nuke Los Angeles if/when it happens. :scared:

:nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke:

1. it won't happen, even under bush
we would try to talk it down, but definitely not interfere. As you say the stakes are too high. I cannot believe even this Congress would allow our pseudo president to do that

3. No
I really don't see it happening. There will be a lot of bluster on both sides, but in the end, Taiwan is NOT so important to China that they'll risk everything they've gained over 20 years for it.

of course... i could be wrong :(

5. I don't think so.

I think China is trying to make the Taiwanese second guess the virtue of independence. Taiwan just had a close election and the result is disputed by some. China is merely trying to destabilize the situation further, in its favour.

And invading an island the size of Taiwan is no small feat.

China's leadership, while totalitarian, is not crazy. In fact, it's far less crazy than America's leadership, which is merely on the road to totalitarianism.

7. I see no upside for China to do this.
They would be condemned by every country in the world. Their core economy (trade) would implode. Ultimately, they'd be killing their own. And Taiwan can more than handle itself. Actually, I suspect that China would pay a far greater price than Taiwan in the long run.

9. China is doing just fine...
...economy is up, foreign money is pouring in, the 2008 Olympics are in Beijing - it would be stupid for them to rock the boat right now.

Taiwan will only need to start worrying if the Chinese economy slows down.

11. Nothing but bluster.
China doesn't have the ability to invade Taiwan. And I seriously doubt they'd wanna trade LA for Beijing anyway.
