I went to the bookstore today...OH MY!!!
If the shelves of my local Barnes and Noble are any indication, a tidal wave has hit the political conscience of this nation and the surfing is GREAT!

First, I live in a very conservative area. Last fall you might find a copy or two of Al Franken's book back in the 'Politics' section but for the most part books critical of Bush were few and far between. Books of a conservative bent were far more prevalent. O'Reilly, Coulter, negative books on Clinton, the whole right wing publishing empire was well represented.

WELL...today, the first thing I noticed was they had no copies of O'Neill or Clarke's books because THEY WERE SOLD OUT. Not only that, there were five or six satires on the Bush administration and numerous other more serious critiques of the administration.

About the only conservative book conspicuously displayed was Hannity's new book. They had plenty of copies.

The nation is tuned in and they are finding detailed devastating indictments of the Bush administration, some of the most popular written by Republicans(!)

Cool! Ride the wave!

1. I'm seeing the same trend
Edited on Sun Mar-28-04 12:01 AM by MonicaR
I bought 'The Bush Hater's Handbook today at my local bookstore. The people behind me in line had James Carville's 'Had Enough?', Richard Clarke's book, and Al Franken's 'Lies'

WOOHOO!!
Sounds like I'd better order some of the books I've meaning to on Amazon or something - I don't want to have to visit 10 bookstores!

I always engage in my way of "civil disobedience" when I'm at a bookstore. Every time I see one of the nauseating Nazi Bush-loving books, I turn it over. HEE HEE HEE HEE!

2. Pretty exciting stuff, especially about the O'Neill book...
Do you think people are picking it up NOW to compare his statements with those of Clarke?!

I think the fact that they are written by career professionals who have worked in Republican administrations and voted Republican may make them more credible for people how live in my area, which is preponderately Republican.

4. We read books, even those with which we disagree. FReepers don't.
Actually, most people don't. Sorry to sound like a snob. Bet more people can identify the contestants on "American Idol" than have any idea who Richard Clarke is.

8. I am sure Clarke will sell zero copies to freepers
Edited on Sun Mar-28-04 12:16 AM by xray s
It's not the freeper Right we need to appeal to. It's moderate, sane Republicans that know something is drastically wrong in this country and are looking for answers why.

Believe me, there are more of them out there than you might think.

20. Well, if that's true, then there must not be all that many freepers.
I mean, look at his book sales - NUMBER ONE BEST SELLER across the country. If freepers aren't buying, they're clearly in a minority. EVERYBODY ELSE seems to be in line with a copy. Assuming the book's not already sold out.

21. OK, already, stop picking on AI
I enjoy this show, and read an average of four books a week, listened to all of the Clarke testimony and about ten interviews. Don't generalize, please. It isn't becoming.

23. yup yup, reading opposing books right now.
reading "Bias" by Goldberg alongside "What Liberal Media?" by Alterman.

ooh, it's like night and day. one is a giggly, gossipy, spew of invectives and touted popular myth assmuptions. the other actually has a bibliography, does quality research which supports scathing commentary, and constructs a solid argument poking gaping holes into many propaganda books, like the opposing book.

i'll give you one guess which one's which. ;)

11. Worth Repeating
Clarke's book was into its 5th printing only FIVE DAYS after its release.

That's pretty amazing for a book by a guy few had heard of before Sunday night on 60 Minutes.

There are two big book distributors for stores when they don't want to go directly to publishers for books. On Friday, one of them was sold out of all its copies and had more than 30 thousand on order.

That, again, is a HUGE amount...the only other book recently that had that sort of order from the distributor was the latest Harry Potter.

The initial print run was 200,000 copies. With this fifth printing, the book is up to 500,000 copies in print.

Considering how diverse the reading public is, and how few people in this country read political books, not to mention books in general, again, that's astonishing.

The Bushies have just shoveled the b.s. to try to damage Clarke, and the more they've done so, the worse they've looked...

Rice's performance last week is the biggest example.

Frist, on the Senate Floor, tried to say Clarke should be charged with perjury, but he backed off that when he was not on the floor and, therefore, would be vulnerable to charges of slander.

This whole incident, with all the notoriety, helps to inform the entire country about the Bushies preferance for dirty tricks and nasty politics.

...which is a great lesson, considering Joe Wilson's book will be coming out in the near future...

12. I was in the library today, in a usually very pro-Bush area of S.C.
and Hannity's new book was right there on the shelf. Usually, new books are in demand and it's necessary to reserve a copy, but this one was right out there. I hear rumblings that the locals aren't awfully happy with Junior, especially in the jobs department in this textile region.

...it's because of Saudi royal family influence on the UK publisher. Censorship, anyone? Scary, isn't it? Can't help thinking again and again of Orwell's '1984'.
