9-11 Commision on audio! (FREE)
I've been a subscriber to Audible.com for the past year or so and am very happy with it. I'd much rather read a book than listen to it, but there are times when the latter is much more convenient. The book selection is very wide, and the audio quality is excellent (sometimes by the authors themselves). You can listen to them on their own device, most PDAs (including iPod), as well as on your desk computer. Here's what I just received from them:

Subject: 9/11 Commission Hearings Available, Compliments of Audible
Date: Sat, 27 Mar 2004 02:57:15 -0500 (EST)

The 9/11 Commission Hearings are available right now for free at
http://www.audible.com/911hearings . These important audio documents represent yet another
way Audible keeps you informed of the important events shaping our time.

You'll hear Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, former
National Counterterrorism Coordinator Richard Clarke, former Secretary of State Madeleine
Albright, and others as they answer tough questions on blind spots in foreign
intelligence that may have enabled the worst terrorist attack in American history.

Download the Hearings now from our Web site, and feel free to share this e-mail with your
friends. Let them know they can download the audio for free as well.

Sincerely,

Corey Thrasher
Senior Editor
Audible, Inc.

1. I used to get those books on loan as I just could not take talk radio
Our library has a lot of them and since I worked about three week-ends a month and had to drive all over Northern NE they were really great. Would love to do some of the classes on tape but they are really costly. Up in the 300 per class.I still get their ads and pour over them. Will try this one you gave us and thanks.

3. I signed up last year
for the Premium Listener package. That's $20/mo. for 2 books each month. I could go for the max and get as much as $60 worth, but it usually works out about $40 worth. The Otis Player that I get free for a year sub, works fine although the tiny screen leaves something to be desired. There's 64MB onboard and a slot for an SD/MMC card. It'll recognize up to a 128MB card but no higher. At good listening quality, that's about 6 good sized books that'll fit in each 128MB card. It uses throwaway AAA cells, so you should never be caught short.

My year is up and there are still quite a few of those books I've bought but haven't listened to yet, so I'll probably cut it pretty soon. But I'll still be good there and can download the ones I've bought as many times as I want. (Or download them at a higher quality). YES,I'm a gadget freak.

2. Not Free At All
As far as I can see there is nothing free at all about this download. Apparently in order to get it for "Free" you have to sign up for the service, at about $15 a month.

4. You're probably right.
When I log off and then go back to that webpage, the option of downloading the "listening" software doesn't show up. But I think you can become a member with just a single purchase, and they have a lot of worthwhile books including a bargain section, After that, you're a "member" andwhatever you had purchased can be downloaded at any time.

Give it a look-see.

5. I thought that at first,
but you don't have to.

Just put it in basket & go through to checkout -- it'll ask you to register but ONLY name/email & NOT address or any payment details. You've then gotta download the aubible thingy & finally start downloading all the files you've selected.

A bit of an arse, but it's nice to have a permanent archive of Clarke's testimony!
