Jim McDermott is my representative, and lately, I've been thinking quite a bit about the brouhaha that he created when he went to Baghdad in September 2002 and said basically that Bush would lie to the US Public:
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines02/0930-02.htm"Speaking of the administration, Mr. McDermott said, "I believe that sometimes they give out misinformation." Then he added: "It would not surprise me if they came up with some information that is not provable, and they've shifted. First they said it was Al Qaeda, then they said it was weapons of mass destruction. Now they're going back and saying it's Al Qaeda again."
When pressed for evidence about whether President Bush had lied, Mr. McDermott said, "I think the president would mislead the American people." But he said he believed that inspections of Iraq's weapons programs could be worked out."Hmmm, now, in light of the White House retraction, and the BBC report that the CIA told the WH the truth a year ago, Jim McDermott seems almost prescient.
He was widely criticized and condemned by all sorts of people. Yet, today, it seems they owe him an apology.
Anyone writing LTE's, feel free to mention that "Baghdad Jim" may have been the most truthful member of Congress last fall.
