Howard Dean on PBS NewsHour -- AWESOME!
Edited on Thu Mar-25-04 07:59 PM by scarletwoman
Not pulling punches at all -- totally sticking it to the Bush (mal)administration!

Lehrer and Rumsfeld was disgusting, but THEN, Howard Dean came on and just blew all the spin and lies out of the water! I'm IMPRESSED! I was never into Dean, but he has just performed an outstanding service to our nation by unrelentingly calling into question the honesty and competence of bush*.

If you're on the West Coast, be SURE to catch Dean at the very end of the NewsHour!

1. I love that man
He appeals to my sense of it being important to state facts in a clear way, regardless of whether it is popular at the time or not.

Alas, he is not destined to be president. Hopefully the dems can use his fire and his support to get rid of Bush*.

5. I have to admit, I stopped paying attention when Rummy was on
I watched Lehrer lobbing a bunch of idiotic softballs and just tuned out -- I can't stand that smirking a**hole (Rumsfeld)!

Just by chance I tuned back in when Dean came on, it was quite gratifying!

Kinda sorry I missed the "ballistic/cut off" part. I was feeling pretty demoralized by Lehrer's seeming pandering to that criminal, couldn't stand it...

3. How does NEWSHOUR shape up?
I'm in Aus, and I don't have cable, so my overseas news is rather limited. We get (IMHO) reasonably fair coverage on our public networks (ABC and SBS) but SBS also shows NEWSHOUR each day.

So, my question is, how is this program regarded? Left? Right? Middle?

From the times I've watched I'd say the general concept is reasonably down the middle but some of the people on from time to time are a little at the polar extremes.

Anyone have an opinion, and apologies in advance for my minor threadjacking.

6. I'd say it's a pretty fair program
The thing that is distinctive about it is that it is very in-depth by current American standards.

8. I think you've got it about right.
Somewhere near the middle with guests from the extremes. I do think there are some issues they're afraid to touch, though, particularly if they impinge on matters involving their corporate sponsors. Archer Daniels Midland's legal problems never seemed to get the critical coverage they deserved & they were (are? Haven't watched in a long time) major sponsors.

As an aside, our RW Congress partially de-funded PBS a decade ago & forced them to seek corporate financing, thereby weakening their independence. A clever & diabolical move by Newt Gingrich in the early days of the Republican Revolution.

11. Thanks Jackpine Radical and syrinx9999
I try and catch it whenever something 'big' happens. We get it the day after it's broadcast, so tips like this give me time to set the VCR.

Our right wing has been trying to defund the ABC too, but the public won't have a bar of it. The funny thing is, of course you'll get lefties on public networks, because the govt pays such crappy wages there is no righty that would submit themselves to it.

Hear hear for public broadcasting I say.

13. No apology necessary.
PBS, the "public" (viewer supported) television network is pretty much a mixed bag. The Newshour, imho, gives an inordinate amount of airtime to apologists for the status quo. Sometimes it's a real hair-tearing experience: they'll cover a breaking story about someone coming out against bushco, then have a bushco rep on to rebut the argument, with no opposition voice to respond.

Some years back, they began to rely on a greater percentage of corporate funding to keep going (in the Reagan years, the government grants were cut, of course), and, imho, they subsequently became rather more timid at challenging the powers-that-be.

I'm biased of course -- being a raving leftist -- but for some time now, I've felt like the Newshour goes out of it's way to be supposedly "fair" -- meaning: it allows the liars and manipulators to have their say unchallenged more times than not.

14. Yeah I can see that too sometimes
that sometimes the crazies get too much time.

Thanks for the reply too.

I had an operation last year that gave me plenty of time to watch newshour, and it was my first glimpse of some of the people so often commented about on DU.

I'll say it again though, public broadcasting rocks. We have a current affiars show on ABC, the 7:30 Report, which I think you would enjoy. www.abc.net.au/7.30 . The host Kerry O'Brien very rarely backs off anyone, to the point that politicians from both sides of the fence joke about disciplining other pols by "sentencing them to 10 minutes with Kerry"

26. Jim Lehrer isn't a whore
more of a high-priced call-girl. They do go in depth, but they have been total pussies about Bush's Iraq lies and they throw a lot of softballs at Repug guests.

4. He pulled no punches.
He separated himself as not speaking for Kerry, but he spoke loud and clear! He practically implied the president was not fit to lead us.

He speaks up quite well on Kerry's records, and covers their previous disagreements sensibly.

7. It's refreshing!
He got a bad rap by the press! Personally I think it was refreshing to see a politician speak with some passion rather than the stale,I'm-saying-nothing-with-a-whole-lotta-words talk that we usually hear.

28. Missed it, but at least someone is doing it.
If I hear one more person say Kerry is above the fray. Kerry is letting Clinton and Gore do the Bush-Bashing. Kerry is taking the high road by not bringing up War Lies, I'm gonna scream.

Kerry needs to get his ass in gear and do the fricking job that Dean is doing for him.
