Watching the local news this evening I see a story about an Elementary School in Stockton, CA.

9. And why name schools after obscure school board members?

My middle school was named after a former school board member no one had ever heard of -- Harold Wiggs, I believe it was. We're not talking about someone who really made a difference in the direction of the school district, just someone who kissed enough ass, I suspect. So of course kids who attended other schools would call us the "Wiggs Pigs" or, alternatively, just make pig sounds at us. Very, very nice.

(Digression: The school opened the year I was in 7th grade, so the spring before opening they conducted a survey among all students who would be attending the new school as to what the mascot should be. Just about everyone I knew chose a write-in candidate: the wildcat. However, the voting was ignored, and I'm guessing that there was a Michigan fan/alum on the committee that picked the name, because our mascot ended up being the wolverine. Now, I'm not arguing that "wildcat" necessarily won the student vote...but I'm pretty much positive that a majority of the students did *not* vote for "wolverine." Reason? None of us knew what a wolverine was -- this was desert country, after all!)
