Well, *An American Dynasty* Has Converted My Father
Talked to my sister tonight; she says she thinks Dad is going to vote for Kerry, because *An American Dynasy* has pissed him off so bad.

I posted about this when I first found out he was reading it, explaining that the reason this is newsworthy is that my father is:

a) an affluent white male in his 60s;
b) a lifetime Republican;
c) always into doing what's good for capitalism;
d) does not have the same problem I have with imperialism.

However, he also e) really believes in integrity and honesty (within, of course, the ideological boundaries he operates inside of) and therefore does not take kindly to lying, cheating, and riggin the game, and evidently now he's had it wiht the Bush family.

I was, however, surprised to hear he was considering voting for Kerry, because when we talked about the primary as a family this summer he had nothing but bad to say about Kerry, who he has apparently seen around doing events and fundraisers and so on, and who he described as "a horse's ass" who was arrogant, a bad listener, and had many other flaws.

Apparently, though, my Dad is now ready to put himself in the ABB column.

This is bad news for Bush...now if my BROTHER endorses Kerry I'll KNOW Bush is toast.

C ya,

The Plaid Adder

1. Cool!
It's amazing to me that even though integrity falls so high up on the list of things that people want from a candidate, there are almost no candidates who exhibit it. Congrats to your dad :)

4. "Dynasty" did it for the male professionals in a family I know --
similar to Plaid Adder's father. Sounds like it speaks to these guys, so consider passing a copy to anyone who might read it, connect, and learn.

8. Palast's book
Did the same to me. I was so angry a couple chapters in that I got was in tears. But my theory is that the mere fact that I checked it out of the library bumped up the circulation numbers for that title, which is one of the factors librarians use in ordering books of the same sort.

7. Hey Plaid Adder
Get your brother a copy of "House of bush House of Saud". That should help him along on his road to recovery.

9. How do we lock down the "Papa Plaid Adder" vote?
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 11:49 AM by rocknation
Between Howard Stern, Richard Clarke, and all the books that are coming out, a lot of Republicans are finding themselves pushed to the edge of rejecting Bush. But they're hesitant to take that final step: "I won't vote for Bush, BUT...I'm not sold on Kerry...I'm not totally happy with Kerry...I'm only ready to put myself in the ABB column..." Most of these people would be voting against the GOP for the first time in their lives, and it just plain scares them.

I think that all the Kerry camps need to devise some sort of outreach effort for people like your dad. Maybe it's commercial with a Republican explaining why he's voting for Kerry. Maybe flyers listing all of Bush's sins could be distributed in targeted Repub areas. And maybe the rest of us develop an arsenal of talking points to use on friends and family ("You can reject Bush without rejecting your party...No matter how you slice it, Kerry IS the more fit candidate...I wouldn't vote for Bush if HE were a Democrat!").

The "Papa Plaid Adder" movement is growing precisely because people are finally getting the facts about the Bush regime. If we can make them feel positive and confident and secure about voting for Kerry (as opposed to against Bush), he'll win by an indisputably wide margin.

10. These stories
of conversion are the one thing that give me hope. I would love to believe that Richard Clarke's interview on 60 minutes along with his book and testimony would be enough to force chimpy out even before the election. But then reality sets in.

Hearing of repug voters who've turned against chimpy gives me a glimmer of hope. Knowing that to actually win a legit election this time chimpy will need all the votes he had last time and then some. In order to keep it close enough to fool with chimpy needs to stop the voter defections and convert enough moderates to his side. Even with Kerry's so-called ineffectiveness right now I don't see chimpy having any massive conversions his way.
