Who else has read "The Price of Loyalty"?
I finished it yesterday and I have to say of all the political books I've read over the last couple years this was the scariest. The inside look at how this administration did things was terrifying to me.
Anyone else feel that way?

1. Me!

Great book. Did not so much scare me as validate what we all thought was as is going on at RoveCO. Also validates DiIulio's "Mayberry Machiavellis".

The big surprise for me: Christine Todd Whitman comes off relatively well as one of the token moderates in the cabinet with O'Neill. Based on EPA behavior, I was NOT expecting that. The book did remind me of the times she was publicly hgosed by the admin...

The other suprise: O'Neill and Bono bonding over thenplight of the emerging nations of Africa, and O'Neill's common sense (and cheap) approach to supplying fresh water.

Why can't there be more Republicans like him? :(

2. There are . . .
they have just been intimidated into submission. Wait until the GE gets going, I suspct that many R's will distance themselves from shrub. After all, their "job" is to get thenselves re elected, not to go down with the ship.

3. Very good book. I have a lot of respect for O'Neill after reading it
not because of what was exposed just that he is/was a self made guy who never lost touch with the "guy on the factory floor" and general demeanor.

Tome the book really is about decision making that the tried and true process he (and Greenspan) used and that it was a culture shock for him to be with the W crowd who made concrete determinations while sitting and stewing for 8 years. There is no way they had access to the info needed to make such policy decisions but that did not stop them.

O'Neill, Whitman, and yes Powell are portrayed as being used to only give the appearance of moderates being a part of the administration. Powell was not employed until 9/11 (there were several "Where is Colin" articles at the time) which lead to the situation in North Korea as well as having to suddenly jumpstart diplomacy again after 9/11.

At the end of the book O'Neill's spot on assessment of W&Co. to Suskind, ~"This is a nasty crowd with a long memory", I think Clarke is about to feel the full brunt of that too.

4. I have
and I highly recommend it. Great writing job by Suskind, and O'Neil comes across as believable and likeable (albeit ego-driven).

6. I've read it. One thing
that I can't forget is Cheney saying that "deficits don't matter". That, combined with other factors, indicates to me that he wants to destroy the US government.
