My e-mail to Jack at CNN re: "Under God"
Listen, the phrase “Under God” was added to the pledge in the early 1950s, at the height of the McCarthy era. It is emblematic of a dark time in our history, when neighbor was asked to spy upon neighbor; when civil liberties were curtailed in the name of patriotism; when entertainers were shunned for their political affiliations. On second thought... Maybe it does belong in the pledge these days.

Never mind.
