Anything that he touches turns to s***. Probably would have made the situation even worse.

although I can't imagine "worse."

14. funny you should mention that
from.........here!

"Back in 1996 Osama bin Laden was living in Sudan, a notorious sponsor of international terrorism. Because of their terrorist tendancies, the United States had a trade embargo with Sudan. A freelancer named Mansoor Ijaz (if the name sounds at all familiar I'll explain what happened to him at the end of this) came to the Clinton White House claiming to be working for the Sudanese Government. He claimed that Sudan was willing to hand over Osama bin laden.

He met with former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger and it didn't take long to figure out this guy was a phoney. Ijaz was trying to get the embargo and trade restrictions on Sudan lifted, because he had investments in Sudanese Oil. Ignoring Ijaz, the Clinton White House tried everything they could to convince the Sudanese government to hand over Osama bin Laden. Sudan wouldn't bite, though they would later kick him out of the country.

Mansoor Ijaz later got a job as a foreign affairs correspondent with Fox News Channel. Happy ending for everyone involved except the three thousand victims of 9-11, America in general, and innocent civilians who were killed in the wars happening because of 9-11."

thanks, Neo Progressive!

15. well, it gets even deeper...
Clarke is talking about the "vulcan" group of Bush's foreign affairs specialists that were prepping him prior to entering the White House and who subsequently become Admin officials......

He is just letting it rip.

Just said "why are they denying the obvious?" That is, the WH and their pursuit of Iraq since day one.

17. Thank you, Richard Clarke! "Howard Dean was right when he said
America is not safer with the capture of Saddam. Dean got in a lot of trouble for it, but he was right."

Also, Clarke says bush* pointed a finger in his face and strongly told him "Iraq, I want to know about Iraq." (paraphrasing) Clarke says he and his staff were intimidated, and strongly got the message bush* wanted a memo saying Iraq was connected to 9/11.

This guy will be remembered by history as a true American hero.

28. Even though Clarke doesn't seem like he'd be easily intimidated
...from all I've read about Bush in various books, his likable image is a veneer. It's plausible that he'd stick his finger in Clarke's face and demand whatever.

Rose isn't on here for another 1/2 hour. I'm glad for this thread. Looks like I'm in for a treat with this "straight-talking" Clarke. There's something believable about a guy like him with his background being honest about feeling intimidated. He seems fearless. So the shrub must be a total bastard under the mask. I wonder if * and Laura have had some real howlers after a few belts of vitamin V-O. I've always wondered about the fight that may have led to the major bruise on his cheek.

29. Oh, gosh, this is incredible.....
Edited on Tue Mar-23-04 12:47 AM by Gloria
He said Clinton did a lot considering Al-Q hadn't done much to us...

said the only reason he didn't bomb the camps in Afghanistan (and was targeting Bin Laden instead) was because the media and the opposition were saying he shouldn't do it, it would be WAGGING THE DOG.

Clinton was "damned if he did and damned if he didn't."

Also talking about Tenet...Rose is going bananas about how amazing it is that Tenet saw Bush every day...and Clarke says Tenet pushed Al-Qaeda...it's a missing link for Rose......the implication that Bush was being informed and basically blew it off...

Prime quotes:
THEY BLEW IT...after 911 to finally get Bin Laden

THEY WERE DOING NOTHING

A FLEETING INTEREST (Bush asked for a strategy, but never followed up...a plan got to him after 911)

THE BIGGEST FOREIGN POLICY MISTAKE SINCE VIET NAM, "WITHOUT A DOUBT"

31. This is very, very intense
Finally, an interviewer who knows how to draw out reality from his guest. I'm not a big fan of Charlie Rose because he tosses softballs way, way too often, but he is asking the right questions tonight.

If the job of an interviewer / reporter is to ask the questions that his viewers / readers would want to ask, and to insist on getting the answers to those questions, Charlie Rose has done his job very well tonight. I applaud him.

Clarke just said that the White House had the book for months and held if for months. It's their fault it came out in this point in the political year.

Way, way too much to type here ... We need to get a transcript of this interview - it is so awesome. Does anyone know how to get a transcript?

This is just awesome, and very intense.

34. absolutely agree with you on rose
after saying earlier what a hoor he usually is

he was actually pretty good, and not as intrusive, to me, as he was for others here.

he actually fleshed out his longer questions, in order that clarke could more specifically tailor his answers, doncha think?

no problems with Charlie here at all tonight

his devil's advocacy was a help, not a hindrance

will tape tomorrow and give some exapmles

not sure about transcript availability

39. Clarke was absolutely outstanding.
Please...if you have a chance to see a re-run, do yourself a favor and watch.

He said he won't publicly support Kerry because he's non-partisan and because that's what the WH is waiting for, so they can accuse him of just playing politics.

So fine...just let his statements stand on their own. Probably more devastating that way, WH spin notwithstanding.

This is a fine interview. Highly recommended!
http://freshair.npr.org/day_fa.jhtml?displayValue=day&todayDate=03/17/2004

In his new book, Disarming Iraq, Blix writes about what happened in the months leading up to the war in Iraq last year. Blix, formerly the head of the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission, has been named chairman of the newly formed International Commission on Weapons of Mass Destruction, which began its work in January 2004

44. Rose tried to back Clarke into a corner about twenty times
and Clarke escaped each time, and added to his credibility by defusing most of the repug smears in advance.

And DON"T tell me that Rose just brought up those things to be the devil's advocate. He's too much of a shill for republicans.

Verrrry good. Glad I stayed up.
