I have a question about the 60 Minutes Interview with Clarke
Towards the end of the segment, Leslie Stahl asked Steven Hadley about Clarke's statement that right after 9-11 took place he was pulled into Bush's office along with a few others and told to see if there was a connection between Saddam and Bin Laden. Hadley, I believe, commented to the effect that no such meeting took place. To which Stahl replied that CBS News independently confirmed this with two sources including one eye-witness. Hadley replied that he stood on his statement. Has anyone reported on who these sources might be or who might be the eyewitness?

1. One of them is named Kerrsey (I think)
He was a former staffer of Clarke's and is now an NBC analyst. He was on the Nightly News tonight. Dan Bartlett basically admitted today that the meeting likely happened but he didn't know what was said.

4. zackly, which makes Hadley a liar once more
remember his role as "fall guy who didn't take the fall" over the yellowcake fiasco?

seems the ONLY bushco slobs who EVER get the boot are ones who tell the truth, like Lindsey, ONeill, and some generals whose names I forget.

who else?

23. Gen. Eric K. Shinseki (general you forgot)
Mr. Wolfowitz, the deputy defense secretary, opened a two-front war of words on Capitol Hill, calling the recent estimate by Gen. Eric K. Shinseki of the Army that several hundred thousand troops would be needed in postwar Iraq, "wildly off the mark." Pentagon officials have put the figure closer to 100,000 troops. Mr. Wolfowitz then dismissed articles in several newspapers this week asserting that Pentagon budget specialists put the cost of war and reconstruction at $60 billion to $95 billion in this fiscal year. He said it was impossible to predict accurately a war's duration, its destruction and the extent of rebuilding afterward.

2. Great memory - I forgot she nailed him on that.
In answer to your question - no. I haven't heard any names, hope CBS or Stahl will report.

7. Veterans
When did veterans of foreign wars become so popular with the Democrats?

I didn't realize they were so pro-military / pro-war.

8. why do you come here and make such INSULTING remarks?
I wear my FATHER's dog tag from WWII, because we LOST the war against fascism, you unprintable......

I was in DC a year ago, marching with the Veterans for Peace, among which were many WWII and Korea vets. they can't STAND what this pitiful excuse for a leader is doing to our nation's soldiers and veterans

you should be ashamed of yourself for making such an asinine statement.

one can be against the war and pro-soldier, but then you didn't come here to make such fine distinctions, did you?

wise up

be alert, STS

11. Before you go...
you might want to read as much as you can here. you may learn that we have some pretty diverse, fairly intelligent, well-balanced individuals around here. It's more representative of what America REALLY looks like than that other party.

Welcome to DU (and the Big Tent)

12. I'm sure you will find many many veterans in the democratic Party
Remember until early seventies there was a draft and most working class people aka Democrats got drafted and sent to war while rich kids like Bush* got cushy NG jobs which they then left when they felt they had served long enough. Just because someone is a veteran doesn't make them pro-war. In fact I would be willing to bet the exact opposite is true. The more a person saw combat the less apt they are to promote warfare. That is the difference between us and the Chickenhawks who never saw a day of combat. They know nothing.

pro war, maybe not, I would hope that all people are opposed, except as a last resort. But I think a few veterans are Democrats, don't you? My dad was.

My dad is a Vietnam vet, one of my grandfathers served in WWII and the other in Korea, and my husband was in the AF for seven years.

So THERE!

16. As a Vietnam Veteran ...
Edited on Mon Mar-22-04 07:33 PM by TahitiNut
... it makes sense to me to support our military by being anti-war. Anyone who's actually been in one is either anti-war or psychotic. Got that?

Your Bronze Star should be above the other medals. First should be the Nat Def then VSR then VCR then above them (on top) should be the Bronze Star (I'm sure you already know this though). And I thought you were a REMF(kidding) but I see maybe not completely.

21. Well, I never wore them. I indeed was a REMF, though ...
... a USARV HQ type. Hell, I'm still happy to have drawn duty at Long Binh instead of the DMZ, or even IV Corps. Evevn at that, I saw more than enough one night during Tet '69. I have absolutely no need to have seen any more than I did.

19. Veterans ....
especially in this government: tend to be Democrats by default ...

Why ? .. because the GOP members of government, by and large, REFUSED the call to military service ...

Dick Cheney ? .... DIDNT serve ...

Ted Kennedy ? .... served with honor ...

John Ashcroft ? ... DIDNT serve ...

George McGovern ? ..... served with honor ...

Tom Delay, Dennis Hastert, Roy Blount, David Dryer ? .. DIDNT serve ...

Tom Daschle, Tom Harkin, Charlie Rangel, Dick Gephardt, Fritz Hollings .... ALL served their nation ......

And THAT is just the tip of the iceberg ....

GET the FACTS .. you WONT get them from Rush or Hannity ....

5. From the book - page 32
Edited on Mon Mar-22-04 06:58 PM by rmpalmer
...and there wandering alone around the Situation Room, was the President. He looked like he wanted something to do. He grabbed a few of us and closed the door.....

"Look into Iraq, Saddam," the President said testily and left us. Lisa Gordon-Hagerty (she worked in dept with Clarke) stared after him with her mouth hanging open.

Paul Kurtz walked in, passing the President on the way out. Seeing our expressions, he asked, "Geez, what just happened here?"

"Wolfowitz got to him," Lisa said, shaking her head.

Lisa must be the confirming witness, and Kurtz the other person Leslie Stahl referenced.

9. If the WH keeps blaming 9/11 on Clarke
like they did today, I bet those two corroborating witnesses might speak up.

I hope so.

20. ABC News found 3 independent witnesses
Tonight on ABC News, they said the White House denied the meetings ever took place. ABC said they had 3 independent witnesses to the meeting; and the White House immediately admitted that the meetings took place; but they denied that the conversations were as described.

So, maybe Clarke, CBS News and ABC News are all lying and the White House is just timidly backing down when challenged. Or, maybe the White House knows damn well that the meetings took place and just doesn't want to be caught in a blatant lie.
