fascism
are we living under a new fascism in the western world? surely if the regular citizen has no power to influence his government then as peter mandelson says "the era of representative democracy is over"?

if it is a fact that the government and corporations are acting as one group then what is going to change by voting for a democrat at the next election? rupert murdoch has more power in america than the 250 million citizens. are people going to face this reality? what are we going to do about it?

1. depends on the democrat you vote for
a republican democrat, or a traditional democrat.
Then still, a traditional democrat even with an admin of his choosing, would be in for a hell of a fight with the govcorp power structure that'd be still in place. repubs would probably start an impeachment procedure right away.

2. nothing going to change under a dean
he's an economic conservative. he's not going to weaken the corporations. the only difference between bush/blair and berlusconi is that berlusconi admits he's a fascist. its fascism by mussolinis own definition.

3. The key is privatization
As more things, as more and more institutions become privatized, we will having increasingly less of a say in how things are run, we will abdicate our repsonsiblities as citizens, and we will give up our freedom. We will be, more or less, chattel.

4. Think of it as a wheel
With the government at the hub and the general populace at the rim. When the "hub" moves a little, the "rim" moves alot to keep up. A slight move to the right by the the hub creates a large movement to the right by the rim. Coversely, a small movement of the "hub" to the left, creates a large movement of the rim to the left.

5. Technically, we could be at the beginning of facism
Both Hitler and Mussolini came to power through vaguely legal means. And September 11th has ensured that a lot of people are more concerned about national security than they are about a lot of other issues.

However, this is still a representative democracy--and there will be a Democrat on next years ballot, and we have the opportunity to get him or her elected. Bush is vulnerable, assuming the elections are fairly administered, and hopefully enough of the American people will be paying attention to the situation to ensure that they are.

8. fight it on multiple levels
There is no quick fix. You have to fight it at the ballot box, but you also have to fight it at a one-on-one personal level and any other way you can.

Maybe you joined the anti-war effort (for example), or maybe you talk to your neighbor. We all do what we can.
