Republican myths. I will start with one.
Myth: Republicans are fiscally responsible.
Fact: Repubs haven't balanced the budget since Nixon.

1. How about...
Myth: cutting taxes is good for everyone
Fact: it isn't

2. Myth: Repubs are strong on defense
Fact: We have troops stationed in 127 countries. So spread out and with hardly any troops here to defend our borders from outside attack.
They are for offense not defense. Various wars for oil make us more vulnerable to terrorism.

3. Myth: Repubs are strong on defense.
Maybe when Eisenhower was President? But not since. Reagan spent like a drunk sailor and it is another myth that he defeated the Soviet Union. Anyway, didn't the Soviets fall under Bush, Sr?

4. myth: "Clinton slashed the Military"
Edited on Sun Mar-21-04 02:07 PM by bucknaked
fact: President George Herbert Bush and then Secretary of Defense, Richard Cheney made defense budget reductions that in terms of percentages, would've made Clinton blush. Also, they had a long-term plan for further reductions (if they had gotten their 2nd term), that were pretty much in-tune with what occured under Clinton.

6. Things you have to believe to be a Republican....
I wish I knew who wrote these, unfortunately I don't. I found this list several months ago and there was no author attached to it.

Things you have to believe to be a Republican today.

1. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.

2. The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U. N. resolutions against Iraq.

3. Government should relax regulation of Big Business and Big Money but crack down on individuals who use marijuana to relieve the pain of illness.

4. "Standing Tall" for America means firing your workers and moving their jobs to India.

5. A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all humankind without regulation.

6. Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.

7. The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay.

8. Group sex and drug use are degenerate sins unless you someday run for governor of California as a Republican.

9. If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.

10. A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.

11. HMOs and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart.

12. Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy. Providing
health care to all Americans is socialism.

13. Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.

14. Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.

15. A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable
offense. A president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.

16. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the
Internet.

17. The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's driving record is none of our business.

18. You support states' rights, which means Attorney General John Ashcroft can tell states what local voter initiatives they have a right to adopt.

19. What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the 1980s is irrelevant.

20. Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.

7. How were Iraqis a threat to the U.S.?
If it is true Iraq had no WMDs.
If it is true Iraq had no relation with Al-queda.
There wasn't a threat of U.S. national security by Iraq.

Sorry Bush supporters, A Republican Lie, by an entire administration that could not succeed unless they went to war.

8. My personal favorite:
Myth: Republicans are pro-gun.
Fact: In the last 25 years, Republicans have passed more gun control than the democrats could ever dream of doing and it's way worse stuff than the AWB which is going to disappear in a few months.

11. Yup...
Who created the Dept. of Education? Ronald Reagan. And Nixon is responsible for quite a bit of government regulation. Reagan only added to it with defense pork, and we all know how much a pennypincher Shrubya is...

Thanks for sharing it.

To add to the list...

Myth: Republicans think you should keep your own money.
Fact: Republicans allow/encourage big business to act in unprincipled and unregulated ways to take your money.

I don't know about old-time republicans, but the ones these days are terribly emotional and don't seem to let facts get in their way.

Look no further than the last election, when the Supreme Court jumped in and overrode the Florida courts.

16. Republicans are against Activist Judgest
But only if they are moderates or liberals.

If they are deciding the 2000 election, it's OK to be activist.

Likewise if they are busy making conservative social law.

Reality: They want to cut COPS and do not want to fund police departments to have better equipment and pay. Only purpose police serve for Republicans are pawns to lock up minorities for them.

19. Myth: Republicans believe in a free market.
Reality: Republicans believe in tipping the scales as far as possible to their big-business contributors.
This includes:
*forcing subsidized-corporate-agricultural products on other countries
*spending taxpayers' money to subsidize loans and direct aid to foreign purchasers of US weaponry (such as the Columbia Plan).
*using the power of the US government to threaten and/or bribe corrupt politicians in foreign countries (like India) to buy powerplants from Enron

20. Myth: Republicans support the troops.
So far from reality it would be laughable were it not tragic.

Ill-equipped on the battlefield with body protection and basic necessities;
ill-treated when wounded (remember the story about the terrible conditions of the sick bays in Georgia? and the one that were automatically discharged in Germany when they were comatose, then recovered, and had to arrange to have their own stuff brought back from Germany?);
ignored when killed;
lied to from start to finish;
mistreated at return home.
Experimented on.
Subjected to vaccines and treatments like Lariam and anthrax.
Discharged (or court-martialled?) for refusing to take anthrax vaccine while breastfeeding.

This one deserves a thread of its own.

21. Myth: the adults are in charge now
The republicans claim to be responsible while painting the other side as crazed hippies.

The fact is they can't govern and they can't find their asses with both hands.
