A CALL TO ACTION
So far the neocons have been able to shut us up because they can label us liberal lefties who hate america. We now have a speech from a Republican Texan "We've Been Neo-Conned" that pretty much hits the nail on the head about the direction in which the neo-cons are taking us.

I am planning on copying this speech and passing it far and wide to anyone I meet. I am also going to try to give speeches in my area and maybe across the country educating people about what it is this group is attempting to do to our country. Who wants to help?

3. Here's the link
www.house.gov/paul

Just look for "We've Been Neo-Conned" and you'll find the speech.

We should also flood e-mails with this information and post it on as many sites as possible, including Free Republic. These neocons are going to destroy this country.

4. If you're in e-mail me and we'll get this ball rolling...
If you have Republican friends who are now turning against this adminstration, let's get them on board as well. We need all the help we can get.

8. I tried to email you, however ....

Anyway, the Honorable Ron Paul and his speech knocked my socks off .... brilliant, absolutely brilliant. (And oh, so terrifying.) Having just finished reading this, I'm sitting here with tears welling up .... I don't understand why everyone can't see what's going on and I'm so very, very afraid for every single one of us. :(

But fear in this case is bullshit .... it won't get us anywhere. I'll do anything I can to help and I think you're on to something here, antineocon1 .... this speech from this man of such character may be just the thing to get some people thinking. (Did anyone else read his biography? WOW!)

Since I was unable to email you antineocon1, could you possibly email me? I have bookmarked both this thread as well as Rep. Paul's website and will check back in tomorrow .... I look forward to helping in any way I can! :)

7. Ron Paul Interview
Edited on Mon Aug-04-03 12:59 PM by Skinner
Subject: Ron Paul Interview
He does have some odd views...? A real mixed bag here.

An Interview with Congressman Ron Paul

BY JAKE BERNSTEIN

Off the main hall at the Republican State Convention in Dallas last June, among all the booths pushing cherished right-wing causes from tort reform to gun ownership, one stood out in popularity. Stationed first as delegates stepped off the floor, the Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas consistently held the largest crowds. The RLC represents the Libertarian wing of the Republican Party. Its standard bearer is U.S. Congressman Ron Paul. By the end of the convention, most delegates proudly sported a sticker that proclaimed, "I’m a Ron Paul Republican."

Paul, who once ran for president as a Libertarian, has been ridiculed by opponents over the years for his role as an ideological gadfly. Challengers for his seat have accused him of holding positions so far out that they place him in outer space. Indeed many of the planks particularly repellent to progressives that Republicans adopted for their Texas platform mirror Paul’s positions. They include abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, eliminating the Department of Education, prohibiting abortion, and doing away with most environmental laws.

Remarkably though, Paul’s principled stance also makes him and his true followers natural allies on certain issues progressives hold dear.

He has lobbied his fellow members to end the embargo of Cuba. Paul has also been a vocal leader fighting in Congress against a war in Iraq. In doing so he has spoken truth to power with an honesty and courage progressives wish more Democratic leaders exhibited. Paul has also been a leader in warning the American public about the dangers of the police state the Bush administration is rapidly building–what the ACLU has taken to calling our "surveillance society." It’s a place where five-count felon John Poindexter (who escaped on a technicality) runs databases out of the Pentagon that hold all of our personal information–from how we spend our money to where we go on the Internet.

11. I've checked him out...
He most certainly is not a libertarian. And, so what if he is. At least he is on to the neocons. And, that makes him a patriot.

Specifically: "He does have some odd views...? A real mixed bag here."

He's a mixed bag because he's a libertarian. He's right on roughly half the issues. Like civil-liberties/privacy he's probably good on. Healthcare for poor folks he's probably not good on. I've got no significant beef with libertarians. I was just pointing out why Ron Paul has "some odd views". Heck, I like the guy. He's my favorite (R) because he's consistent, honest, and principled. I may think he's wrong on some things but he sticks to his guns and seems to know his stuff, especially his Constitution.

14. I dont really believe it but
thats a repub I could vote for. It's nice to see repubs on the other side standing up for democracy. I repect any person that votes thier mind and not thier walet. Like a certain shrub. Why cant the Repubs front more canidates like that. Losing wouldn't be nearly as bad then. Gotta love someone whos not afraid to call a spade a spade.

The real question is, should we encourage repubs like this? and How?

If he's against these neocons, then he's got more going for him than most of the Republicans than I know.

18. Well, you can support Paul directly by contribution or primary vote
if you live in his district. From what I understand the Neo-Con's try to knock him off every election with a primary challenger but never succeed. If it gets close maybe shoot him a few bucks. Alternately there's a group I think he founded - the RLC, Republican Liberty Caucus that's supposed to support libertarian style repubs. If they run a primary candidate in your area you might switch your reg. to repub and vote for the RLC candidate in the primary. That's the best I can figure off the top of my head. Although more generally, just get the word out whereever you hear repubs talking about how bad Bush is. If they won't go 'Dem, maybe they'll go Libertarian or support Ron Paul style republicans?

*Note to mods/admin - I am not advocating voting/donating to repubs/gop for any purpose other than the primary. In the general I fully support the progressive candidates and would not suggest that anyone else do otherwise.

15. You're right, caribmon ....
.... he is a mixed bag! Especially when it comes to these views of his, "They include abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, eliminating the Department of Education, prohibiting abortion, and doing away with most environmental laws." Now, as far as the IRS, I say GO FOR IT!!! (Couldn't agree less on the others, though.)

I'm impressed by the following, contained on his Biography page:

"He is known among both his colleagues in Congress and his constituents for his consistent voting record in the House of Representatives: Dr. Paul never votes for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution.

While serving in Congress during the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dr. Paul's limited-government ideals were not popular in Washington. Dr. Paul consistently voted to lower or abolish federal taxes, spending, and regulation, and used his House seat to actively promote the return of government to its proper constitutional levels. In 1984, he voluntarily relinquished his House seat and returned to his medical practice.

Dr. Paul returned to Congress in 1996 after successfully winning a House seat representing the 14th Congressional district of Texas. He was re-elected in 1998.

Dr. Paul's consistent voting record prompted one Congressman to comment that "Ron Paul personifies the Founding Fathers' ideal of the citizen-statesman. He makes it clear that his principles will never be compromised, and they never are." Another Congresswoman added that "There are few people in public life who, through thick and thin, rain or shine, stick to their principles. Ron Paul is one of those few."

Regardless that I might not agree with him on the issues mentioned above, (and would never vote for him because of my personal feelings of importance on a couple of those issues), my first impression is one of great respect, however. Sounds like he doesn't "pull any punches" and you always know where he stands .... honesty and integrity like that is far too rare, (especially in the sleaze-trade that is politics).

I still found his "neo-CONNED!!!" speech very timely and well-written and am looking forward to gettting it in front of more pairs of eyes! I do think that caribmon provided some valuable info regarding Rep. Paul's views on some very important issues, however, and am thinking that maybe they could/should be incorporated into any emails as well. It doesn't have to be (and certainly shouldn't be) anything derogatory, but I would hate for such an important message to be disregarded or brushed aside because all of the info about the author of the speech wasn't provided "up front." (Just a thought, antineocon1 -- this is your deal & I'm open to following your lead, certainly!) :)

17. I think you've found the solution...
He's a straight shooter. He votes what he believes in no matter what. We could perhaps write a similar speech or essay using his ideas.

23. NeoCons are in both parties
See the discussion on New Democrats here:

It is scary, and it is also why so many democrats are voting with the republican party on so many issues.
