Question RE: a TruthOut article
White House Admits Bush Lied About Iraqi Nukes

After weeks of denial, the White House Monday finally admitted President Bush lied in his January State of the Union Address when he claimed Iraq had sought significant quantities of uranium in Africa.

Original:
http://www.capitolhillblue.com/artman/publish/article_2518.shtml

The title of the original substitutes "Wrong" for "Lied", and in the first paragraph, "was wrong" for "lied".

I've never known TruthOut to make such editorial changes before, so am I correct in assuming that the original article softened its own language to avoid the L-word?

1. He changed it because
The White House didn't Admit Bush "Lied."
The White House admitted Bush was "Wrong."

Everybody else knows that "wrong" means he "lied" but that's NOT what the White House said. So he changed it. He stands by his story regarding what Wilkinson heard.

4. That CHB changed the headline gives me some faith in their sincerity. BUT
...that they could make such an egregrious journalistic error at all makes me view them through the same lens as Fox for now.
(and for the record, it's not a TruthOut.org story, it's a Capitol Hill Blue story that TruthOut also published)

If they have a source (Wilkinson) and he is on the up and up, he is making what is basically an accusation that can bring down the presidency (it reveals everything they are saying even today, with all their backtracking, to be total lies). If that is the case, then he should come out to all the major media and tell his story. If he has confirmation (tapes, records of the meetings at least), then he should get them out there. If not, the story is bogus.

We can't bite on someone throwing stories out there with no evidence when that is what we are fighting with Bush in the first place.

6. Read this thread from freepervlle
"Doug Thompson" is the guy behind the Capitol Hill Blue website and the story on Wilkinson. In this freeper thread they are trashing the hell out of CHB and the Wilkinson story. And guess who shows up and starts posting? Doug Thompson. And during the fray he agrees he should change the headline. It is interesting but it will take a few minutes to slog through it:

7. truthout is misnamed
they do warp things. about a year ago, i noticed that one of truthout's links to a wire service news story about the israel/palestine conflict was given a misleading headline. the link text said the palestinian authority was responsible for some atrocity, but the article said it was hamas.

i notified them of the discrepancy. marc ash refused to change it, even though the israeli govt itself said it was probably hamas. instead of changing the misleading text, he sent me a completely different link, to a debkafile story. i think truthout knows better than to cite debkafile publicly, if they want to maintain any semblance of credibility. when i asked if he thought debkafile was a more reliable source than the israeli govt, ash tried to change the subject, and put forth a variety of illogical arguments such as, "i support a palestinian state, i'm a good guy, the palestinian authority is evil, it's common knowledge, and you should trust me".

of course, i never trust people who make arguments like that.

he basically insulted me and signed off.

don't believe everything you read on truthout.

i know i'm not the only one who doesn't trust truthout. a few months after that, i saw a link on the flashpoints web site asking for people to contact them (flashpoints) with such stories.
