Poll question: Best Republican for President
Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 02:25 AM by Bucky
Just what it says. Republicans--like earthquakes, flu pandemics, and painful relationship break-ups--are bound to happen even in the best of realities. You must pick the lesser evil. "None" or "They are all equally worthless" or "Best to never have Republicans at all" just don't count as valid responses. If we have to have them, which one would you rather end up with as your president?

Oh, and to make it extra special tough, I'm taking John McCain off the list. Sorry, no easy outs. Who are you picking now?

(on edit):
No RINOs, either. No easy outs. The people suggested must be people who are genuine Republicans and stand a reasonable chance of getting nominated. Sorry I wasn't more specific before.

Any relation to Canada's Rhinos, who want to cut off the tops of the Rockies and use it to fill in the Great Lakes?

11. Well then.
In that case, I say, in for a penny, in for a pound.
We might as well have Ahnold - that way, not only will the whole world know what a joke America has become, but even the Rethugs won't be able to deny it with a straight face. We'll laugh our way down the primrose path to hell...

14. Good poll!
One thing a lot of us Lib/Dems lose sight of is the presence of decent people and a sound philosophy among a movement and political party hijacked by the Neo-Cons.

A lot of these kinds of Republicans are following the example of John McCain and are starting to speak up. Even if we disagree on most major points of political theory, they deserve our support. (Though not at election time! :))

I can live with conservative difference. I can't live with neo-con neo-fascism.

20. Don't Even Get Me Started on Christine Todd Whitman!!
She was Governor of New Jersey when I lived there.

She got elected partly because people were pissed with Jim Florio, and because she promised (and delivered) a 30% across the board tax cut.
She did it by raiding the teacher's pension fund. To replenish THAT fund, she rammed thru a bond issue, not due for thrity years at the time...and now it is still twenty years from being due, and Whitman don't gotta worry about re-election as NJ's governor.

In effect, she mortgaged NJ's future, and robbed from todays kids, to give today's adults a tax cut. After all, who did YOU think was gonna pay for that bond issue she rammed thru?

19. You Might Consider This One A RINO, But I'm Picking Him Anyway...
Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania.

He once was my Senator. I actually voted for him...the only Repuke I have ever voted for. I've often wondered why he don't jump parties, because his politics are far closer to ours than the neo-cons that now control the 'Puke Party.

27. Spector is a RINO
Spector has been marked as a RINO and has been targeted for defeat in the PA Republican primary this spring. I think you can also omit Snowe, Chafe and Voinovich from this list. You are write about Christie Whitless. NJ has been a fiscal mess since she left to be a stooge at the EPA. Didn't the chimp make her look like a joke? This is tough because it eliminates the handful that have a shred of decency. I agree with the other who pointed out Arnold. Why not have a good laugh since we are forced to pick someone that will flush the country down the toilet.

More liberal than the Democrat that beat him in Joe Lieberman...

But, I don't think he's eligible.

Lincoln Chafee would be a good one as well.

I would love to see him as president. He is on Colin M. show on WTIC-AM every once and a while and he is smart and also a hoot! He wants to know what Rowland did with all the money he left in the state treasury! You gotta love Lowell. I still have my "I'm a Weicker Liker" pin.

30. Pataki is not bad as NY governor
he's not great either, but not bad. And extremely popular here in NY. I don't know what Tom Golisano(R) was smoking when he decided to run against him as an independent.

32. what are you talking about???
:wtf:

Pataki is not "extremely popular," and he is absolutely awful!! And I'm saying this as an upstate New Yorker.

While he may have been popular right before the election, his popularity has plummeted. These are the figures from November 2003:

Pataki’s job performance rating is 48% positive, 50% negative. Half (50%) of New York’s likely voters say the state is headed in the wrong direction, compared to 36% who say it is going in the right direction.
