Is there precedent for a vice-pres to attack a candidate for president?

Is there precedent for a vice-pres to attack a candidate for president?
I just find it odd that Cheney would come out of the gates attacking Kerry on a war issue, of all things. That's one area where Cheney's background is the weakest. So I began to wonder why he was taking the leadership role in this attack,instead of Bush? Is Bush so weak that Cheney has to do this for him too? Is there any precedent in history of a vice-president coming out so strong against candidate for president?

1. It is a Republican tradition
They have a VP hatchet man and the president can stay above it all. Think Nixon, think Agnew, think Dole.

3. It doesn't really matter with Cheney doing the attacking.......
Here he is with a 30 something approval rating....who the heck is going to listen to what HE says? Only the freepers and fundies.....LOL
