2. Umm....its difficult to tell from these pics....
although, I'm quite sure that enough of these troops are
harboring anti-shrub thoughts. I'm quite sure that they were all
pre-screened as well. Wouldn't want anybody to pop up a sign or
anything.

You salute at attention.

You do not smile or look around at attention..

15. so, why are these troops 'looking all around' while saluting shrub?

seems like 'attention' should be paid to the CINC....but nobody in this photo seems to care at all...they are certainly looking around everywhere...maybe they heard that shrub was AWOL during the Vietnam war...and could care less if he sends these troops off to their deaths in Iraq....

36. Woah.
Eyes tell a story, too. Especially if the sentiment is already there.

A couple of these guys have what I can only call menacing glares, and they're each directed at the same spot.

These guys aren't stupid. I'll bet you dimes to dollars many of them already know they're not really fighting for the safety of America. They're smart enough to stand at attention and salute, but they're astute enough to let their displeasure show in their eyes while the shutter is open. Adding it to a saulte is simply the little brick in the glove I'm sure some of them would like to smack their Commander in Thief with.

help me out here veterans: when I was in the military I was taught to hold my arm up, parallel to the ground, and touch the end of my eyebrow with my fingers. These guys are at such an extreme angle.

17. agreed, especially unacceptable salutes for a CINC....

one would expect a real prim-and-proper straight up salute for a Commander-in-Chief's arrival.....

OUR troops are clearly unhappy with AWOL and his war-profiteering cohorts....the bushies LOVE sending these troops off to sacrifice their blood for his campaign-donors' oil....no wonder they are so unhappy, and unwilling to give a full salute to the AWOL.....

19. seems that ONE guy managed to pull it off properly, the older guy
in the upper right hand corner, near the top of the USA Flag....

guess it's old-school (and the older-troops) to show respect for the position of CINC, but the younger troops look like they are ready to mutiny against orders to salute AWOL....

20. The guy behind him has even better form, from what's visible.
But I'd bet this is not a mass, synchronized salute of aWol, awaiting his obligatory return. In a group like this, their senior member would salute for the group, like at a 'review'.

They are probably saluting during the National Anthem, and are facing the Colors or the music (the collapsed distance and angle notwithstanding) .

Betcha.

If you are at rest, you can pretty much do anything as long as you don't move your right foot, which includes smiling and applauding.

I was just pointing out that the photos in the thread show people in formation and clearly at attention (you can usually tell the position from the distance from the set of the shoulders even in a show that would not show the arms behind the back at parade rest).

10. That's Funny
The last time Shrub was at Ft. Campbell the troops were acting like "girl scouts at a bake sale".

I don't think this is as far off the mark as you say. Look at the first photo, the soldier to Shrub's left looks like he's about to cry,
and the female soldier to his left has what looks to be a forced smile on her face.

By the way I used to be sergeant in the Army, and I can tell that these troops are not happy. It's the way they stand, and the facial
actions that tell the story, the way that some avoid looking at Shrub
as he walks past them. All this is a sign of troops who want to be someplace else besides where they're at, or aren't buying the crap
coming out of Chimps mouth.

Remarks by Mrs. Laura Bush During February 6, 2002 Address to Wives at Fort Bragg, North Carolina

As delivered.

-snips-

As you know, my husband is currently marketing his wonderful, new budget to the American people. This, of course, requires countless photographs of both of us surrounded by you people in time for the evening news. So, here I am.

(APPLAUSE)

Standing here, I am struck by how useful you people are. You see, we Republicans couldn't have asked for a better marketing opportunity to push through breathtaking tax bonanzas for our constituents than the possible deaths of your dear husbands!

(APPLAUSE)

Bushie has really enjoyed having his photo taken wearing camouflage recently at military bases like this one. It would be nostalgic for him if he actually remembered the 1960's. But, I tell you, I used to have a scrapbook with pictures of my handsome husband taken when he fought fearlessly for an undetermined amount of time in the Viet Nam conflict in Alabama. They were the cutest pictures of Bushie in his jet way up in the sky. In fact, I had many pictures of my husband from that era flying high as a kite.

.....

So, just by being here – you with that sad look in your eye, could you move closer in? – we're not filming in Cinemascope, here! – you are doing your part to make sure that corporate sponsors of my husband's administration are given the windfalls they righteously demand. See? We can all do a part in this great country of ours! Even you little people.

What with the dying and maiming theater that they are about to be engaged in.

Having some chickenhawk politician come by to cheerlead me towards my death with pom poms would not make me feel any better about it.

He also walked the chow line with his wife, Laura, and with soldiers, picking out fried shrimp, corn and broccoli. Bush passed on the prime rib, but marveled at one soldier's slab of beef: "Whose steak is that? That's half a cow!"

Will be keeping an eye on future possible beef eating declined by boy king.

For one thing, he ought to really know how bad the BSE problem is--interesting if he personally chooses not to eat beef and they sure as hell won;t issue a press release on that.

Last couple of days USDA upped the BSE tests significantly (but over a long period or some such wishywash).

Can the Cattlemen's Assoc. force * to eat cow ala Oprah?

24. Maybe the military is beginning to question whether
it really is the "mission" of the United States to bring freedom to every single person in the world.
We're a nation with a mission, and that mission comes from our most basic beliefs. We believe that freedom is the right of every single person in the world. By the unselfish dedication of Americans in uniform, people in our own country and in lands far away, people can live in freedom and know the peace that freedom brings.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/02/20040217-5.html

I doubt many people enlisted with this "mission" in mind.

31. Just plain silly..
These pictures prove nothing at all other than that some of us are beginning to sound like the rightwingers when they were busy saying the same things about the military "turning" on Clinton.

The US military is by and large very professional. They don't boo a CIC, they don't salute in a disrespectful manner, they don't refuse to smile for certain presidents, etc, etc, etc.

The military is fairly conservative all around and no doubt a majority will still vote for Bush. Are some soldiers disillusioned with Bush? I am sure of it. Would you be able to tell from Bush's trip to Ft. Campbell? Not a chance.

The entire idea that you can look at some snapshots of Bush's visit and believe one can divine that "the troops are turning against AWOL" is just plain goofy.

Don't count on it. I come from a military family and no one is voting for Bush this time around. My nephew is in Iraq, and Shrub is not popular among the enlisted men.
