Bin Laden could have been stopped before 9/11????
This morning the local Atlanta (NBC) news did a very short piece, about 2 sentences long:

"The CIA has released a tape that shows they knew where bin Laden was before 9/11. The Clinton administration claims they did everthing they could....."

Does anyone know anything about this?

The way this snipet was done clearly implies that 9/11 was Clinton's fault, without even dating the footage. It also only looked like a tent and some people in a desert area-about as convincing as Powell's proof prresented to the UN.

1. The image was from an unarmed drone
By the time they could respond they would've put the entire compound at risk, and still not have had certainty that they got Bin Laden. Based on this incident the Clinton admin went to congress to get funding for the arming of such drones. It was in the works when this Bush* admin killed the project.

This has been floatign aroudn for months and never seems to find any traction, largely because there is nothing to grop on to. Albright was on the Today show yesterday and talked about this (with slightly different detail) if you care to find that transcript.

5. 'Course,
(in addition to that), the video shows a group of people, with one being taller than the others and wearing a white robe. Obviously binLaden. Who else would be taller than the other people an a grou and be wearing a white robe? That is, of course, damning proof that President Clinton simply ignored the binLaden threat! He didn't go storming in to the general area with bombs blazing, killing everyone in sight, 3 or 4 hours after a tall person in a white robe was sighted walking with a groutp of people! What deriliction!

Now, the fact that binLaden was in an American hospital in Saudi Arabia for 10 days in July, 2001, and was allowed to simply walk out and go home to finish his attack plans is ...um...er...um...gee...well, this is what I have to say about that...um...we couldn't get to him in time...it was only 10 days, you know...and...besides...um...who knew? ummmm....!

2. Need more information about the story, but.....
Most sources indicate the Clinton administration did, indeed, do everything they could.

From January 2001 to September 11th, 2001, another administration was in control. They had other priorities. More people are beginning to wonder why Bush et al. are avoiding the investigation; hence the "blame Clinton" stories being pushed.

Bush slow on bin Laden drones before 9/11
Posted 6/25/2003 7:37 AM

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2003-06-25-drones-osama_x.htm

WASHINGTON (AP) — Prowling the skies over Afghanistan in the months before President Bush took office, unmanned and unarmed Predator drones proved to be one of America's major successes in its frustrating hunt for Osama bin Laden.

But the promising aircraft remained grounded under the new administration until after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, say current and former U.S. officials who describe a paralyzing internal debate over finances, arming the drones with deadly missiles and concern over who would take the blame if something went wrong.

Unresolved issues at that Sept. 4 meeting included whether the CIA or Pentagon should operate newly armed Predators and whether its new missiles were sufficiently lethal to kill bin Laden, a designated terrorist already blamed for deadly attacks against two U.S. embassies in Africa and the USS Cole and the subject of at least three secret orders by President Clinton to have him captured or killed.

The disappearance during 2001 of Predators from Afghanistan — partly because of unfavorable seasonal weather patterns and fears that potential targets on the ground were learning to spot them — is discussed in classified sections of Congress' report on pre-Sept. 11 intelligence failures and is expected to be examined by an independent commission appointed by the president and Congress, officials said.

WASHINGTON, June 25, 2003

(CBS/AP) The Bush administration was advised in early 2001 by a holdover from the Clinton White House to use unmanned aircraft to target Osama bin Laden, but worries over missile technology and territorial wrangling between the CIA and Pentagon delayed the deployment until after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Officials speaking on condition of anonymity said that within days of Mr. Bush taking office in January 2001, his top terrorism expert on the National Security Council, Richard Clarke, urged National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice to resume the drone flights to track down bin Laden, citing the successes of late 2000.

At a White House meeting of Mr. Bush's national security principals on Sept. 4, 2001, senior officials discussed several ideas, including use of the drones, as they finalized a plan to accelerate efforts to go after al Qaeda amid signs of a growing threat of a domestic attack.

Monday August 5, 2002

The Bush administration sat on a Clinton-era plan to attack al-Qaida in Afghanistan for eight months because of political hostility to the outgoing president and competing priorities, it was reported yesterday.

The plan, under which special forces troops would have been sent after Osama bin Laden, was drawn up in the last days of the Clinton administration but a decision was left to the incoming Bush team.

Mr Clarke, who stayed on in his job as White House counter-terrorism tsar, repeated his briefing for vice president Dick Cheney in February. However, the proposals got lost in the clumsy transition process, turf wars between departments and the separate agendas of senior members of the Bush administration.

It was, the Time article argues, "a systematic collapse in the ability of Washington's national security apparatus to handle the terrorist threat".

But the Time report quotes Bush officials as well as Clinton aides as confirming the seriousness of the Clarke plan. The sources said it was treated the same way as all policies inherited from the Clinton era, and subjected to a lengthy "policy review process".

6. Two problems . . .
First, the CIA did NOT release the tape, it was leaked and there is already investigation into who leaked it.

Second, Bush skipped at least 3 chances to target bin Laden in early 2001:

7. Here's the deal...
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 10:41 AM by TheBlob
Toward the end of the Clinton administration, unarmed Predator drones spotted what was believed to be Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. As a result, Clinton ordered the Predator drones to be armed. Around this time it was recommended that the drones be taken offline (as the weather was about to take a turn for the worse) and revamped to be armed with Hellfire missiles. The consensus was that the Predators could be back in the skies around March, after testing of the new armed drones. Bush was given this information by the outgoing administration. The new drones were ready in early Summer 2001 but no action was taken to put them back in the skies. On September 4th 2001, the Bush administration decided AGAINST putting the drones back into use.

After September 11th, armed Predator drones were put back in the skies over Afghanistan WITHIN DAYS.

So who REALLY dropped the ball?

This is old information. This ABC News link is from June 2003!
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/world/2020/predator030624.html

Yet it appears major media has conveniently forgotten this and is now twisting this information to Bash Clinton.

On Edit: And Underpants beat me by a length ;-)

9. bush's CIA met with OBL on July 16th, 2001. But the problem is, OBL didn't
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 11:49 AM by radwriter0555
perp 9.11, at least, according to the FBI and his own statement of October 8, 2001, released domestically by the bush regime in early december, 2001, where he emphatically denied committing 9.11. He KNEW it was going to happen, but he didn't plan it.

Then there is the problem that on the FBI's most wanted web site, on OBL's page, there is NO mention of 9.11, at all, whatsoever. Lots of other stuff, all of which OBL took credit for, but no mention of 9.11.

For the article on OBL meeting with bush's CIA, go here... http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x1243906

And then read the transcript of his last interview before his death in December 2001 by googling it. NO where does he take credit, and in fact, he denies he did it. He was PROUD of it and PLEASED. Doesn't make him the perp.

The perps are dead. Although one has to wonder about the 100K that Atta was paid the month before the event... by the Pakistani ISI, known consorts of the CIA.

14. Republicans Cannot Blame Clinton
Republicans will try all they can to blame Clinton for 9/11, but if the truth gets out they will fail. Everything everyone has said is true. However, there is even more to think about. First, in the book "Bush At War" President Bush admitted that the day before he was sworn in as president he was taken aside and told that OBL was the #1 threat to America. Bush goes on the say he did not come up with a plan to go after OBL. Second, on the day of 9/11 Bush knew that America was under attack by about 8:05 a.m. Bush did nothing except go to the school he was supposed to visit that day. Throughout the attack Bush could have order jet planes to attack the hijacked planes and shoot them down. For some reason he did not do this. Finally, Bush allowed a suspected terrorist who may have know about the attack before it happened leave the country without being vetted by the FBI. No matter how many times Clinton may have missed OBL he is not to blame for 9/11. Bush must take the blame because he could have done many things to stop the attack before the happened and while they were happening.
