Kill Me.
If you turn on the T.V. or radio at some random moment, you are bombarded by language that suggests someone must be rubbed out to save our culture. Invectives are hurled toward an enemy, and you must wait to find out if the hurler is calling for the disembowelment of a Liberal, a Homosexual, AQ, The Spanish Voters, Kerry, The French, Atheist, War Protesters, The ACLU, The DNC, Street People, Peta Members, Vegetarians and Socialists.

They are disgusted and AMAZED! by how groups like these can be permitted to exist, and they use the same style of heaping invectives in absolute terms, the horrid outcome of allowing this.

What the fuck happened to this country? For all hours of day and night these omnipotent geniuses call for the death and destruction of roughly half the U.S. population. They describe themselves to be god fearing, god understanding, righteous, moral, correct, smart, most deserving, and they also describe every atomic particle not in that image, as Satanic, immoral, crazy, and dangerous. Basically they are asking the audience to kill the enemy now because it wants to kill them.

Fear and paranoia have become the norm, a national psychosis being fertilized by these fear merchants. This Society, IMO,is teetering on the edge of a self inflicted civil and cultural war that will become the seed for a massive blow for all humanity.

1. although a rant....
you make much sense.

In my opinion,
what happened to this country
is that it has been taken over
by ideologues
whose depth of thought is that of a birdbath

..no room for intellectuals
matter of fact, they are scared to death
of the public being able to think at all

for obvious reasons

7. It's not that easy.
I must also kill my radio, and poke my eyes from the sockets in case I happen to stroll by a newsstand. Then what to do with all those folks that repeat the mantra of death just heard on Hannity?

Even if you are a non-Christian or Jew, these people usually are so this is a way of reminding these idiots of what God said.

6. I think "National Psychosis"
hits the nail on the head pretty well. The whole thing is starting to seem barbaric - whatever happened to civilization??

I can't watch television anymore, I just go berserk. The government and the media are whipping up the "faithful" into a frenzy of hatred. Just like the Germans in the 1930's - the process is remarkably similar.

I am beginning to think that even if we win in November, the RW fundie chimp lovers aren't going to go away or back down. It may even make things worse. The future looks grim right now.

Edited on Wed Mar-17-04 06:22 PM by Mountainman
I listen for a few minutes then I have to turn it off. But I like to here the callers. They come on and make some wild ass assumption about the groups you speak of and the host talks about something completely different during the call. Laura Ingrahm does this.

Then they thank the idiot caller who most of the listeners identify with. You can find the same comments in freeperville. I am not sure which came first the freeper comment then it is recited by a caller or the caller's idea gets repeated in freeperville.

In any case the comment makes no sense and is completely illogical.

These are the people that their sponsors want to sell to. Also these
are the idiots the right counts on to vote for them even though they are getting screwed daily by conservatives.

They all sound like a middle aged white male with a high school education or less. It's amazing how they all sound pretty much alike.

Then the next being that will inhabit the planet will come along and have a crack at it. There's no use fighting it, just change the channel and find something more entertaining while you wait for it to happen.

14. It's run of the mill hate.
Edited on Wed Mar-17-04 06:27 PM by tjwash
And hate is a good distraction to keep those that were frothing at the mouth to elect B* from realizing what a giant screwup he has been. The good news-the more hate you see, the more people that are seeing through it. I know of several people at work that voted B* that are voting Kerry this year.

A good solution? Turn off the news and watch HBO, or a movie, or read a book. Turn off the radio and put in a CD. Post and read DU.

15. 2 causes come to mind
Two events happened in the 1980's that I think sent us down this road of hatred and division.

1 - Reagan turned the keys to the Republican party over to the extreme Christian right, thus ensuring the culture wars of the next 20 years.

2 - The rise of right-wing radio around the same time, where in an attempt to gain ratings the rhetoric got more and more inflammatory. These right-wing radio hosts have torn apart the country to an extent where a middle ground is almost impossible and where human dignity is completely disregarded (witness the "Hillary murdered Vince Foster" chant they *still* repeat).

We're no longer one country. We're two, and I also think that unless the ruthless right-wing assault on our common citizenship ceases the years ahead are going to be complete chaos.

32. Plus, the laws have changed

Some laws that required broadcasters to actually be "fair and balanced" have been repealed in the last 10-15 years. Not sure if they ever applied to cable TV, since I think the justification was rooted in the notion of the "public airwaves."

on recommendation of fellow DU-ers, since I asked what they listen to now that Mike malloy is oof the air.

I think this is the kind of morans you're talking about. I'm sad for all of you who have to endure this kind of shit everyday.

17. When exactly have much of anything on your list...
...been popular with the American people?

"Liberal, a Homosexual, AQ, The Spanish Voters, Kerry, The French, Atheist, War Protesters, The ACLU, The DNC, Street People, Peta Members, Vegetarians and Socialists".

I'm sorry, but this notion that America was some progressive bastion in years past, and is only now becoming more conservative is utterly bogus.

Homosexuality, War Protesters, the ACLU, Street People, PETA, Vegetarians and Socialists? That is half your list right there. When were these things ever popular with America society? Infact, I'd say that America is probably more tolerant to many of these ideas than it has ever been before.

Example. Gay marriage - do you expect the American population would greet this idea with open arms? When in our history has gay marriage ever been accepted? The fact that civil unions seem to be broadly accepted by the average public as an alternative to gay marriage seems to be great progress in my book.

Athiests? When was this every popular? Animal rights activists whom routinely make shocking statements? This has no history of being generally accepted in the history of the United States.

I could go on and on.

What is AQ by the way? Is this al-Queda? I hope the America population wants to kill these terrorists. I sure do.

"Fear and paranoia have become the norm, a national psychosis being fertilized by these fear merchants. This Society, IMO,is teetering on the edge of a self inflicted civil and cultural war that will become the seed for a massive blow for all humanity."

Sorry, I don't buy it. The US made it through the Reagan years, and we will make it through the Bush years. And if you think Bush is the worst we will ever get, your doomed to be horribly dissappointed. Sometimes we will have great Presidents like Clinton, sometimes very average Presidents (Carter falls into this category in my opinion), and periodically we will have truly awful Presidents such as Nixon and Bush.

All the while though, it is the left's agenda that ever so slowly marches on. The Republicans act as a force to slow down progress, but they can't stop it.

Edited on Wed Mar-17-04 06:44 PM by salinen
because the same language used to describe AQ is also used to describe Liberals et al. Nothing would please me more than being totally wrong on this. But there are differences. The U.S. has declared pre-emptive, self guided, warfare on any country that threatens national security (or just desirous of their resources). So we have a world in shock, watching what the crazies between Mexico and Canada will do next.

27. You have a point
All I am saying is that there is no safe hiding place. At some point you just gotta dig in and take a stand.

My situation was that I moved to a country for business reasons, thought it was almost paradise, and the next thing I know the people elect a reactionary, nationalist rightwing government. What can you do? I was very dissappointed, but since I am not a citizen of that nation there really is nothing one can do.

I didn't move away from said country because the government changed, but it made me realize that there truly is no safe refuge. People's attitudes change, the pendulum shifts, nothing stays the same.

Stick it out. Don't run away because you don't like the government. If you generally don't like America, then perhaps you should move. And there is nothing wrong with that by the way, you just may find that the US is not the place for you. But if you like American people, are generally okay with the culture and mostly like living in the States - I'd stick it out and fight for the kind of change you'd like to see. At least as an American citizen you can raise you voice and complain to your fellow citizens when you don't like their choices.

The hate the poor (bums!) the immigrants, minorities, Dems, liberals, gays, people who support unions....it's hard to figure out who they DON'T hate -- people just like themselves I suppose.

34. the language is offensive to me too.
but never again will i succumb to fear. we are not alone as the RWers suggest. we are in the majority. we just don't feel it because they took all the communication lines away. they took our voice. but not anymore. they are slowly losing their grip and they know it. they energized the wrong base. and it will bite them in the ass. just be patient.

i'm seeing the light and i'm making adjustments: no regular TV, just cable or pbs. no radio except for NPR. i'm particular about my newspapers too: NYT, wash. post, chicago tribune (all online). I stick to progressive magazines: mother jones, The Week. I give myself a fighting chance with moderate to liberal sources. I used to think I needed to hear the other side for a more balanced exposure. But I react too physically to the RW propaganda to entertain that nonsense anymore. Life is short. Why suffer like that? It's all lies anyways.
