For my 100th Post - a question
My boss is a real repuke - has an autographed photo of * is his flight suit framed in his office - goes to all the * fund raisers - pays his employees squat while he drives his BMW 745LX one day, his 2004 Hummer another.
So, here's the question: I want to be active in this election - bumper stickers, signs in my yard, buttons, etc. How much grief could I get doing this at work? Right now I am even afraid to put an "ABB" bumper sticker on my car. This guy fires people left and right and in my field, IT, the pickins' are pretty slim right now.
Any thoughts from fellow DU'ers?

:hi:

1. Short answer-
Basically, he can do whatever he wants. I'd definitely keep things compartmentalized.

2. Don't do it at work....but....

3. Don't do anything that will jepardize your job
Voluteering your spare time to the campaign is a good way to be active and work for change.

4. keep it quiet
I work in a fairly conservative industry as well, and I rarely discuss politics at work (even though one freeper in the next row was spouting off about Clinton letting bin Laden go several years back...)

My old company (ranked in the Fortune 100, but NOT a public company) used to require management level people to give to the Republican party. While the official memo went out that they suggested giving to the Republicans, it was sent with a *wink wink* "You better give if you know what's good for your career. They have a list and your CEO will be checking it twice." (and, for the record, I was never that high a level of management there...)

I don't even know if that is legal or not.

6. Of course it's not legal.
But when has that ever stopped them from doing anything like that? Now, if someone ever got a phone conversation, or a recording of an exchange like that though...

9. Of course it's legal....
Assuming he is an "At will" employee (not a union guy w/ contract etc) .. and without knowing what state/country he is in and the laws of that place.. The guy can fire him for anything he wants aside from a very short list of things... of which political party is not on the list.. CA .. he could be fired easily... The poster could sue in return.. but I doubt he would win.. the employer would never admit the real reason in any case.

At Will employment is just that.

I suggest he keep his mouth shut... it's not worth it... If he is that active for *, you will likely find yourself out of a job for one reason or another..

5. Options
a) Go all out and playfully ballbust with thugs you work with. Risk getting fired.

b) Keep it quiet. You should be able to have signs at your house though. Still a risk but you have to draw the line somewhere.

7. Contribute
to Kerry's campaign or MoveOn; nothing could be more irksome to a repuke boss than to see his money funding the other side :-)

8. Keep it out of work. Sign his address up for some Bush hating site.

and off the bumper of the car you drive there.

You can add him to Kerry's list or something funny like that.
